Are electric cutouts crap ?

Well are they ?? ive heard of the mccord jambing (sp) and falling apart within a short time frame... are they really crap ?? any other alternatives besides crawling under the car and undoing the cutout manually ???

Jeg's does sell a cut out that is cable operated. The only bad thing is it's cast iron and has to be brazed on, I didn't have any luck finding local places that still braze. Also the cut out only fits up to 2 1/4 pipe.

Its not that much to do it manually. I'd get the FlowTech, many have it with good results.

I wanna mount the cutout somewhere thats not easily seen or acceable from under the car, and still have it direct the exhaust out becase many of the cops in my neighboor hood are real dicks... thats why i was looking at an electric one...

Supposedly the first generation ones had those problems. The second generation ones are said to have had those (and other) problems fixed. They seem to be a good choice, but they are other electric cutouts (do a search at CamaroZ28.com's LT1 and LS1 forums for "cutout").

I got a cable operated one. Broke the cable within a couple of weeks, so I went out and bought a manual choke cable. Put that on and it broke soon. So I just took some wire and wired it shut. All of a sudden going down the road it came open and the cutout broke(the flapper can do a 360). Had a muffler shop just weld a cap to the end of the tube.
