A clamped exhaust system has multiple leaks (you can tell by running the car and spraying each connection with soapy water you'll see bubbles where the leaks are) and sometimes with the windows rolled up and you hit the gas, you can hear the minor spatter of exhaust leaks. I had all the exhaust connections welded except where the Y-Pipe fit into the Catalytic converter. It sounds a lot more solid that way.
