Budget exhaust from the headers back
Budget exhaust from the headers back
I just bought an '82 Camaro with a rebuilt 350 swapped into it. My problem is the exhaust. I need to change it immediately. The sucker run off Hedman Headers down into two glasspacks right below the seats and you can't hear a damn thing inside the car. I'm having a muffler shop look at it tomorrow but I was wondering what kind of exhaust I could get that would be cheap, sound decent, and be un-restrictive.
I'd like true dual but I'm wondering how much more expensive that would be than a single pipe. I know there are people on this board with lots of experience in this area. What would you suggest for exhaust?

I am running headman headers with dual glasspacks, and it is not that loud inside the car. Of course, I have the 'packs under the bumper, not the middle of the car. Granted, when I step on it, you notice, but that is all part of driving a camaro. For budget reasons, i ran flex pipe from the headers to the 'packs, but the headers, pipe, and mufflers came with the car when I got it. Just had to put them on.

How are the glasspacks mounted? Are there brackets welded to the floorpans?
And how much do the glasspacks effect you're ground clearance? Are you scraping on them left and right, or do they work out ok?
Any pictures?
I am considering a similar system, and not many people have this setup.

I've got a glasspack right off of my Y-pipe and its not all that loud inside... but I haven't put my headers on... I'm running with exhaust manifolds (they're damn good ones though compared to stock, surprisingly) ... its not loud because I have one of the really large ones... so its got a very low bass thrum to it ... I just used the stock mounting points for the catalytic converter more than anything to keep it up though... couple of exhaust straps work nicely instead of welding as well... but I've gotta get some flex pipe to run it out to the drivers side instead of out the back or on the passenger side... (yeah, I like to **** people off in the drivethru's, hehehehehe)
The headers go into the Y-pipe, then back out into 2 pipes and turn slighty so that the two glasspacks are directly under the passenger seat. They do sound good, they're just too loud. I have trouble hearing my radio, people talking, etc, and that's just at cruising speed. They're also just hanging free so they are very low to the ground but I haven't had any ground clearance problems yet.
I went to the exhaust shop and they said that they had put true duals on an F-body before (it was a 3rd gen Firebird I believe). They said that they could do it on my car for $350 to $400 dollars. If it works out I'll get some sound recordings and post 'em.

Personally I find glasspacks annoying and excessively loud in most applications. I think they sound mean, but whats up with the volume? I heard this guy start up his second gen Camaro in the Advance Auto parking lot and he gunned the engine, it must have been 140+ decibals... that ****in' hurt my ears WTF? I would suggest to anybody with an exhaust that puts 90-100 decibals @ WOT into the passenger compartment (stock V8 thirdgens are around 65 dB I think) should think for a second about the people around them.
