Advice

Hey Guys,

I would like your advice and opinions. I am new to Pontiac and have two 1983 305 HO TA's, 4 wheel discs, t-tops and power everything, one has a newly rebuilt motor in it, body has seen better days. Stock except for a bigger cam, I am told. I bought the car like it is. The second one has no motor or trans and only 60000 miles. I am going to take the motor and trans out of the one and put it in the 60000 mile TA. I want to be able to drive this car on th street and at the track, but I dont care if it is smog legal. When I change body's I want to add headers and exhaust for more power. I also want to change the cam and lifters, they just dont cut it, but that could also be the motor as a whole, seeing as the 83 was not known for its power to begin with. The car does alright for an 83, but I would like more. I was going to rip out the AC and air pump and all associated hardware as well unless other suggestions are given. I may even go with an electric water pump. But money always has a say in any mods to be done and when I can do them. Any and all suggestions on exhaust and motor mods are appreciated. I am not sure what exact direction to go in with any of this, but your advice will help me make those decisions. Also how do I find out what trans is in the car or where they all the same and can I get any kits for the trans to spark that up a little.

Also I put Bosch plugs with the 4 point contact and after the fact have been told they are not the best for that car. As a matter of fact I believe one of them has fouled out already just the last time I drove it. The wires are new with a new cap, rotor and HEI super coil. Any suggestion on the electrical are also appreciated.

Thanks for the info. Are the heads on that motor good heads to port? When you say full exhaust are you speaking of true duals? I also was on another site that said the HO motor only came with a manual 5 speed in 83 and I have an automatic in mine and it is stock to the best of my knowledge. Any thoughts on that.

Thanks
Spence

Depends on what your goals are and your abilities.

I'm sure adding full exhaust, new cam, and porting the snot out of the heads would net some great ETs.

Or there's always the ole 350 route

Also, the 4 electrode plugs are a gimmick, there's still only one spark that is igniting the fuel. Just get regular AC Delco plugs. Copper conducts better than platinum but platinum lasts longer.

Transplant the motor as is and maybe change carb to a holley. Junk the Computer. DO not go with an elec.water pump. that would be aGIANT waste of money for that motor. Is your Trans a 3 or 4 speed??? If it's a 3 speed it's a 200R which is basically a Th350. If it's a 4 it's prob. a 700R4. Put a shift kit in it and you'll be fine. I also recommend saving up for a bigger motor. 305's are boat anchors. They are the worst "performance" motor ever in my opinion. However it gives you a nice start for your project. Iron out all the Gremlins with this combo and then step up. Good Luck
