Hooker 2055 vs. Edelbrock TES- please take a look for me!
Hey guys.
I decided it's time to replace the headers and cat on my 91 Firebird. I am looking at doing this next week, ordering the parts anyway. My questions are these-
1. Which headers would you guys go with?
2. Am I correct in thinking that both are 100% emmisions legal stock replacements.
3. I am planning on getting a Catco cat to go with, 3", will this cat bolt directly to both or either of these headers?
I am just wondering if the headers/y-pipe will bolt directly to the 3" cat with no problems. I already have the 3" cat-back. I am looking for easiest installation here. Please let me know what you guys think. Thanks a lot, I want some answers from you guys before I order anything.

They are emmisions legal and will fit right up to the 3 inch cat. The main reason the 2055's are better is simply the design. The hookers are made better and will most likely make more power.

I also see that Heddman has a emmisions legal shorty header for a 3rd gen. Any opinions on those?
Looking at Cat-converters, do we need the kind with air tube on them or not? Do you guys have any part #'s for the Catco or Dynomax Cat Converters that I would need? I am seeing on Summit the Catco, universal fit part # CTO-2907. Is that what I would be looking for? Thank you again.

MetalliCamaroRS:
you've probably seen pics of the Edelbrocks and the way their primaries decrease in size at the collectors. do the hookers do the same or do they retain their 1 5/8 size all the way down?
also are those the same as these except for the air tubes??

I am pretty certain that the Hooker Super Comps maintain their size throughout. Also, the ones on ebay are the Hooker Competition headers, the ones I have are the Super Competition. The difference- beats me
i think the difference is the y pipe. the 2460s dont come with one, which is why they cost only about 150 new. the 2055s do but apparently not for dual cat cars which is what i have.
i feel like selling my TES's now and getting somethin better.

The 2460 and the 2055's have different collectors and the 2055 have air tubes and come with a y pipe which is superb to any other design out there. Get the 2055's and you will not be sorry.

With a high flow cat or not cat at all
the advantage the dual cats have over a single can is nill. Honestly you probably wont see that big of a gain going from edelbrocks to hookers. You will see a gain, but to me if you already have the edelbrocks then just stick with those and spend your money elsewhere.

llvll4l2c91350,
I'm not sure, but you need to check with the state and find out the federal requirements.
IIRC, if your car came stock with 2 cats, you have to keep 2 cats.
Find out or you could be in for a real shock.
BTW, does Florida even have emission tests?

there are no emissions testing down here though so maybe its not even required. and i'd go with non AIR headers this time.

Using the 2055's with dual cats would require cutting off the y-pipe where it joins to a 3", then running individual pipes to the cats. Overall, not a bad idea, just more work and expense. However, if you already have two good cats and cat-back, the conversion to single cat may cost you more.
Two 2-1/4" cats will flow slightly better than a single 3" cat.

I went with the edelbrocks.....sent them out last week to JET HOT....can't wait to get them back. Anything is better then the stock junky manifolds....
yea if i end up selling mine i'm thinkin of going with either the hookers 2055 or slp 1 3/4. i think i should benefit still from the larger primaries even though my motor isn't that modded. and i'd keep the dual cat setup. like i said if anyone wants a still new set of edelbrocks for cheap just PM me.
shagwell,,,you going to the F body gathering in kissimmee on saturday?? i'll definitely be there.

Yeah, my vote is for the 2055s. I'm much happier with them than my brother has ever been with his edlebrocks. I didn't even have to lift the passenger side of the motor to get mine in. You might want to find the thread about changing the plugs with these headers though. I think HeavyChevy started it. Definatly go with short header plugs with these.

, the best of the best is to order direct from Jet Hot coatings. Mine were $525 shipped to my door. Call them and see 1-800-432-3379 They can even send you an information packet if you are a little weary of spending that much on coated headers. IMO it was money WELL SPENT!!!Later,

$525 shipped from who?
do you buy the headers first from someone, send them to jet hot and they send them back or what?
or does the place you buy the headers send them to them and then you get them? i'm a little confused on the process, not sure what the hell i just typed. thanks for the replies.

You can buy them directly from Jet Hot, or Summit or Jegs, already coated. Or, you can buy them from Summit or Jegs uncoated, and send them to Jet Hot (doesn't make much sense).
If you are getting a cat, and want ease of installation, get the '86-'90 TPI single-cat application direct-fit. The universal fit will require fabrication to get it to mate the cat-back.
BTW, TES are available in several different applications, the difference being primarily the y-pipe and how it attaches to the cat (carb versions also have the EFE valve provision). The 2055's are the complete emissions-legal version with y-pipe for '86-'90 TPI single-cat application (the only application for which they are technically legal, although I doubt you'd get any questions on other applications). 2460's are headers-only, no y-pipe, not emissions-legal, although they are available with A.I.R. by special order (still not emissions certified, but again, doubt you'd get any questions).
Since single- or dual-cat had to do with other performance options such as axle ratio, you wouldn't have any problems switching from dual to single. Either one will have to have the A.I.R. tube, though. In order to get the 2055's to fit with dual cats, you'd have to cut off the y-pipe where the two sides join and run individual tubes to the cats.
