taking out the CAT

I was just wondering how exactly to get it gone. I've got a hooker cat back coming in and noticed that my cat is welded on before and after the cat. So, sounds like I'll be hack-sawin. Since I'm doin this stuff, I figured I'd pull the cat off. What would I have to do though to keep from seeting off codes. It has that little AIR tube coming off of it. thanks.

why not just leave it on? or get the $95 catco high flow? you lose all of about 1hp, but without unnecessary pollution or violating federal laws...

well, because I can GAIN some hp from taking it off. It's called "backpressure." Plus I live in SC, there is no emissions testing. As for the environment, everyone could take their cat off and do nothing but drive and I seriously dought I'll ever live through the effects of it.

wow, thanks for clarifying that, especially to someone with degrees in mechanical and aerospace engineering. like i said, by putting on a high flow cat, you lose maybe 1-2hp, and that's only if it's the most restrictive part of your exhaust system. so it's rather obvious that you GAIN 1-2 hp by getting rid of it. and i'm sure that'd be a noticeable difference, just like driving with 2 fewer gallons of gas or removing your charcoal canister to reduce weight. is it worth it to replace the stock cat with a higher flowing version while you have things apart? sure.

of course it would be worth it to replace stock with after market higher flowing cat, unless of course, you're going to take it out completley. Aerospace huh? that's pretty hard. I'm getting started in civil engineering right now. I'll prob. go back and get my mech. too while I'm at it b/c they arn't but couple credits different.

who cares... if he doesnt need it... why bother spend the money? as a Electrica/Mechanicall Engineer in the making... it doesnt take a year of statics and dynamics to realize that if you dont need to spend the money on a cat, then why bother? Its not a matter of flowing air or anything... he doesnt need it... he wont be tested for it.... why bother? you can remove your AIR tubes from your headers, and if your going to remove you cat, then you dont need the whole system at all, so just take it all out. Retain your egr, or that will throw a code or have a prom burned so that you can eliminate egr function. If you dont need to spend the money, then why spend it on a cat? hi flow or not? Personaly, not having a cat is a good idea cause you no longer need to worry about a $100 thing getting clogged up with crap... if you dont need it, why bother... engineering at it basic level... Plus the removal of weight will make your front end lighter... not gunna make it you drop .5 in the 1/4, but every little bit counts... not to mention the all the room it frees up in the engine bay... with all that gone, it will look a lot cleaner.
