Need advice on exhaust system!

I have an 88 GTA with a 350 TPI motor. It's all stock except the K&N filter. Anyways, I want to start upgrading stuff on it and figured the exhaust would be the best place to start. I'd like to get headers and the exhaust at the same time and do it all at once. I wouldn't mind getting an electronic cutout either. Does this stuff have to be welded in? I've heard good things about SLP headers, but what do you guys recommend? I live in Oklahoma and we don't have any kind of inspections here what so ever so could I get rid of my catalytic converter? Where can I get all this stuff? Do the SLP headers or any headers for that matter have a spot for the oxygen sensor? I'm willing to spend around $1200 on exhaust goodies. How much HP and torque do you guys think I could gain from a good exhaust setup? Thanks for any advice or info! Matt

I spent ~ $700.00 on my SLP 1 3/4 non AIR dual cat headers including the Jet Hot coating. The dual non cat Y pipe I welded together to take place of the cat Y pipe after E testing cost ~$75.00 in parts. The Mufflex 3 1/2 catback with a Spintech muffler was $575.00. Add ~ $40.00 for various clamps and hardware and it adds up to ~ $1400.00. If you go with a less expensive catback (Hooker) and if you have a single cat system go with Hooker headers (BEAT Mark to it) from Jet Hot (definitely get the coating it's money well spent) you can do less than $1200.00.

i would agree the SLP or even the edelbroke headers are a good choice..also,dump the cat if you have no provisions where you are located and install the Banks stainless cat back system for like $300 more or so...then,look out!!!..your ride will sound and perform amazingly..

Car: 88 Trans Am GTA
Engine: 5.1L Gen III
Transmission: T56
Axle/Gears: 3.70
my current system:

$210 Hooker Catback Cut about 3 ft past converter
$303 Hedman coated long tubes
$35 Stage 8 Locking bolts
$15 Felpro 1444 exhuast gasket
$25 Hedman S-extensions 2 1/2
$8 o2 sensor bung
$65 tpis 3 wire o2
$145 exhuast shop y-pipe, press bent-ripoff-cash, no receipt no cat
$18 new motor mounts when everthing was hitting...

I think that about covers it. Ok the install sucked but now that i think about if it weren't for motor mounts It could be done in a day quite easily. I'm sure there's a way to replace the mounts without taking out the front springs, but I was to pissed at the time to take the time to look it up on here. It probably took me and my dad 4 hours to replace the mounts and get the car back on the ground, and this is on a lift with a extra tranny lift to raise the motor. Maybe its not as bad with the non WS6 springs. My ears still hear from the open headers.

Ok just got it back from the exhaust shop today and a HUGE Seat of pants increase in power, It certainly feels like I picked up 20+ hp but i also got new plug wires, cap, and rotor, which i was overdue for. I haven't had time to drive it much yet and the o2 sensore won't go to ready for some reason (stuck in open loop) so i've got a little more work to do there(shop probably just plugged it in backwards). Kinda supprised me when it spun second coming home tonite but thats ok with me. I'll try to get a full write up on here in a few days.

If your O2 sensor will not go into ready then the ECM will never go into closed loop. There may be nothing wrong with the sensor other than placement. On LT headers it is usually down in the collector which is too far from the exhaust port. The sensor cools off which will not allow the sensor to go ready. Rev the rpm up and see if it does, if so (it may still not get enough heat) you found your problem. Conversion to a 3 wire heated O2 sensor from a '95 VIN Z S10 with a 4.3l engine will fix your problem. Just hook one wire (heater power) to the fuel pump relay for power when the engine is running. One wire to ground and the other to the sense wire to the ECM and your done. Most header installations really should have this done anyway.
Your engine is probably burning a ton of fuel as long as you don't have closed loop.
