OK, I just got straight pipe put on my car. It's 3" cat back and then goes down to 2.5" after the over axle pipe. (yeah, got a cheap cat-back, threw the muffler away and used the piping )
Anywho, it's is now insanely loud....and i love it, but the tone is far less than desirable. I can almost say that those fart cans on hondas sound better What I am asking is....does the cat muffle sound more than a muffler (say glasspack) would? And if I were to cut off the cat and just weld on the brackets to bolt up a muffler (say glasspack) would it make it sound any better, or HOW MUCH better would it sound? Any suggestions/ info on what kind of muffler or resonator would sound good in place of the cat with what I have described? Sound clips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

I sugest you get a regular muffler. I guess you could slap in a glass back inline, but Im not a big fan of glass packs. If you dont need emissions stuff in your state, then why bother putting the cat on? Cat is not to muffle sound, it is to cut down on emissions. It just so happens that it also acts as a muffler. Personaly, id get a 80 series flowmaster, or an aerochamber muffler.... thumbs up to the hooker aerochamber.

 

Do the 80 series sound anything like the 40 series? I think the 80s are quieter....am I right? Thanks for the info.
