Installing Headers

I want to buy a pair of Edelbrock headers for my 1984 Camaro Z28 with the 5.0 H.O.engine, and a pair for my 1983 Camaro Z28 with 5.0 Cross Fire Injection, but a mechanic I talked to told me that the whole engine has to come out of the car to install them, because there is not enough room, do you know if this is true?

Welcome aboard.

Yes, we know if it is true.

It isn't.

You may have to disconnect an engine mount bolt and lift the engine slightly, but that's hardly "engine removal".

yea thats what i figured cause my dad said the engine would just have to be lifted with an hydrolic lift, but i think this guy just didnt want to do it, and I wasnt even askin him if he would do it, i was asking him how to do it, cause im gonna be doin it myself.

You're much better off asking advice here. A thorough search of posts on this forum would probably tell you all you need to know and you wouldn't even have to ask any questions.

Edelbrock was the first on the market with 3rd gen emissions-legal headers, but others have followed suit. They aren't necessarily the best, but they're okay. They certainly have more that fit more models than anybody else.

But, the "hot ticket" is to convert the entire exhaust over to the TPI-style system. There, Hooker shines with their 2055. A high-flow direct-fit cat for '86-'90 single-cat TPI application from most any manufacturer, and same application cat-back will give you much better performance than parts for your specific application would. And, yes, they'll fit both of your applications if you go the whole 9 yards. The only caveat is the A.I.R. fitting on the driver's side header faces the rear of the car, so you have to replumb it back towards to front where the carb application (and I assume crossfire) runs. No biggie.

The instructions that come with the headers are enough to guide you through the job.

Whos a what now? I'm getting 2055s with AIR and I wasn't aware that I'd have to reroute anything. You have to redirect the driverside AIR tubes to what? I'm somewhat of a newbie so bear with me.

On LG4's (and L69's, if the sun still rises in the east), the driver's side A.I.R. check valve points forward (as does the passenger side). On the 2055's, the driver's side points rearward (like factory TPI exhaust systems, for which they're designed). The passenger side points forward on the 2055's, so no problem there.

So, you need to put a couple of elbows and a piece of pipe on the driver's side so you can point the check valve in the same direction it was before. Or, completely reroute that hose from the diverter valve around the back of the carb to the check valve. I chose the elbows. My stock hose from the diverter valve to the check valve was then too short, so I used a length of 5/8" heater hose to do the job. Turned out pretty clean, IMHO.
