with or without cat?
with or without cat?
hi everyone.
when i bought my car the cat was broken, so i decided to take it off.
now i need to pass legal inspection so i have to put a new cat.
the question is, does car performance change with or without cat?
thanks

That's been debated a few times here. In fact I had the same question when I went from having a 3" straight pipe to having a 3" Magnaflow high flow cat (to pass visual inspection) installed in my car. The general concensus I got was that most people feel that with a high flow cat performance really won't be affected at all. The exhaust note will be toned down some, which was good for me, because I couldn't drive my car for more than an hour at a time without getting a headache. Now with the cat in there it's nowhere near as bothersome, but the exhaust still sounds good. Not as loud, but super loud isn't always what you want. Basically from what I understand if you throw a high flow cat in the system it shouldn't affect performance much at all, but I'm sure others here can add to my comments, since I am FAR from an exhaust expert

I have ran my car without cats for a few years. Now I have come to realize that the fumes without the cat tend to give me headaches and makes my clothes smell like fumes.
Just with the car idling next to the house makes my eyes water.
Granted, my 650 holley dblpump runs rich at idle but from what I've read here, it seems the I am not the only one who finds the fumes irritating.
Even though I like the deeper sound you get without the cats, I still plan to reinstall some highflow cats.
And that's my 2 pennies.

Well, here's my problem. My car has bad exhaust fumes with the cat which is a high flow and is only 2 years old. I run no other emissions and a 600 DP on my current engine though, so it is likely that the cat has gone bad.
I know of a few cars that don't run cats and they don't smell at all. Their cars must be tuned better I guess.

Sounds like more of a serious problem then having no cat
