H or Y pipe....or nothing??

Engine: 305 soon to be 350
Transmission: 700R4 soon to be T5
H or Y pipe....or nothing??
I..i've heard that if i dont put an H or Y pipe on my dual exhaust my performance wont go upper....there's true?? or i can put some indepandent exhaust each side that throw flames under the door just before the wheel??

ok scuse me...i mean X pipe!! 
but you say that there's no probleme with single exhaust on each side??? or it had to be H or X pipe??
