exaust mods?

i just bought a dynomax catback exaust for my '86 T/A and it really didn't do anything for the performance or sound of my car. I know that adding a cat back system isnt going to give you tons of hp over stock, but I expected at least 5-10? Anyways after i got it on i took the car out and ran it, it was exactly the same...slow. I am thinking that because teh car now has 50,000 miles and the converters never been replaced this could be why. I dont really want to replace the conterter, id rather just take it off because my friend at the muffler shop said hed do it for 30$, and because i heard that a reasonable increase in power would result, along with making the car louder Ü. I am wondering how much power i could gain. But ive also heard that if you take the converter off then the exaust will pop or backfire and sound bad, since my car is basically stock- aftrmkt air cleaner and cat back.
I am still in school and on a limited budget, but cant stand all these fart pipe hondas wizzing around school, esp. when some are faster then i am! i am just wondering what the best way to go about this is for teh best sound and power. thanx

Headers will add more noise and power.

Take out the cat. unless you need to pass emissions. And also if you were looking for a loud exhaust you shouldn't have picked dynomax.

Take the Cat out. If you have emmissions, I would put flanges on all four pipes. That way when it comes time for the test, you unbolt the straight pipe and install the cat. Another thing that might help is replacing the Y pipe. It is a little small, and a bigger one would help as well.
