Anyone ever done this? Possibly stupid.....

Ive got straight through pipe (no cat) from my y pipe to the Flowmaster 80 series, and its louder than i like. I know putting a cat back in it would quieten it down some, but has anyone ever put a glass pack in front of one of these flowmasters? I realize this is probably a stupid thing to do, i just wonder what it would sound like. Opinions? Comments on other theories?

i dont really think it would be that bad of a deal honestly. I was in a similar situation as you are, no cat and my flowcrapper was just too loud. but i bought the edelbrock cat back and bolted it up. i still have no cat but it sounds beautiful! great mellow tone even witout a cat. if you want to keep your flowmaster muffler, i dont think putting a muffler where the cat is would hurt it much, it might change the tone, i'm not sure about that. if you do put a muffler where the cat is i woudl spend the money and use a race bullet or somethin durable. a cheapo glasspack from NAPA wont last long that close to the motor with all that heat, i woudl think the packing woudl burn out pretty quickly under those conditions, but maybe that would be a good thing who nows. the bottom line is, i dont think it is bad to put a muffler where the cat is if you want to quiet it down a little, just make sure it is a very good flowing muffler so you dont loose too much power.

Flowmaster does make a resonator. Here's the description:

'Tuned resonator designed to be used in conjunction with Flowmaster mufflers for improved sound reduction. Helps eliminate interior resonance. Utilizes a 3.00" offset inlet/3.00" offset outlet design, measuring 4" thick x 8" wide x 12" case length'

I know someone who did the same thing. Cut the cat off put a flowmaster on and it was too loud. They put a glasspack where the cat was supposed to be and it worked out. It made it quieter but still left a nice sound and didn't have a problem with the durability side of it.

well i don't know what size/engine combo you're running, but on my 'old LG4 I straight piped the cat and stuck an eighty series in place of the stock muffler on the stock exhaust system w/ dual 2 1/2 inch mandrel bent dynomax tips.

I thought it sounded real mean. Didn't go fast, but it sounded the part. Not too loud though, guess 170 horsepower doesn't get loud huh?
