hooker 2055, cat and catback questions

im seriously considering getting a complete exhaust done on my 89 formula and im pretty much sold on the hooker 2055's, a carsound cat and the hooker catback system.

My questions are, will the 2055 y pipe fit up exactly with a 2.5" or a 3" cat or am i going to need to weld a downturn on to mate them up.

also, is the hooker catback system a full 3" from the cat to the muffler or is it 2.5" to 3" from the cat to the muffler?

hi there,

I just had edelbrrok headers put on and have also put on the hooker cat back 3". the one with the split duals.

It is 3 inch all the way to the muffler. Then the pipes that exit the muffler at the end are 2.5 I believe.

I have everything welded which i am sure many would agree is the best thing to do. Hooker does

Sound great! Quiet at cruise.

My car has the 2055's, a magnaflow cat and the hooker catback. The Y pipe is made to slip onto the end of the cat. Its made to fit a 3 inch cat but mine they didnt have the size exactly right and i couldnt get it to slide on so i had to take it to the mufffler shop and have it welded. The catback is 3 inch all the way to the muffler then it splits to dual 2.5. Most catbacks are the same way it doesnt hurt anything. Makes for a pretty good setup 3 inch from headers all the way back past the axle.

i have the 2055's and the cat i used had a 3" ID, inner diameter. i had to have a piece made to extend the system to fit with my banks catback, but thats irrelevant, he told me that the cat is supposed to fit over both the ypipe and the catback. cats are fitted like mufflers.

Get a direct-fit '86-'90 TPI single cat application cat and it will fit perfectly on the 2055's and the same application Hooker cat-back.

Yes, you can. That's called "factory stock", not "direct fit".

But, I'll spell it out so you can follow along: "...a direct-fit high-flow aftermarket '86-'90 TPI single cat application replacement cat..."

Does that make it any easier for you?

(Since when did the factory install Magnaflow cats?)

I have a magnaflow now i didnt just bolt my exhaust on yesterday. If it is supposed to be direct fit with aftermarket only then it needs to say it. And are u a hooker representive that their products are always perfect because five7kid says they are. HAHA

No, I'm not a Hooker rep. I've had all sorts of different manfacturer's products, I've had "issues" with almost all of them, but have had the fewest "issues" with the 2055's of all that I've had (although the Summit brand SBC '55-'57 headers were pretty much trouble-free).

There certainly are a lot of "conventions" with regard to terminology in this hobby, moreso than "definations". I've never seen, though, "direct fit" applied to either factory installed or factory replacement parts. Only to aftermarket products when replacing factory installed or factory replacement parts.

If your Magnaflow didn't fit the 2055 y-pipe outlet right, it either wasn't a direct fit replacement for a factory stock or replacement '86-'90 TPI single cat application, or there was something wrong with it.

My factory cat didnt fit. And it was hollowed out and i live in a emission area so it kinda of hard to get a muffler shop to weld up a hollow cat when there is a big fine. So i had to cough up $200 for a new cat because the hooker wasnt a direct fit.

Ahh, but the 2055's aren't "intended" for carb'd cars (assuming yours was a factory carb'd car). That's why I specifically said "'86-'90 TPI single cat application". Because that's what Hooker says their 2055's will fit.

If you replace all of the exhaust with '86-'90 TPI single cat application replacement or aftermarket parts, no welding or adaptation will be required. Since the originator was postulating replacing all of the exhaust, and since he has a vehicle that fits within the '86-'90 TPI definition, I made that recommendation in my first reply to this thread. I'm not even deviating from my "typical" response to this type of question, even when the originator doesn't have a vehicle that fits within the '86-'90 TPI definition, since it is a sound approach unless you have a carb'd car and the Smog ***** are going to be looking for an EFE valve (they haven't in my case). If that is the case for you, there's another approach, but that isn't appropriate to address here.

Why all this back-and-forth? There was nothing wrong with my recommendation, but you seemed bent on modifying it based on your experience. From what I've been able to gather, your experience doesn't apply to my recommendation or to the originator's situation. So, why are we bothering the originator with unnecessary, inappropriate, and thread-cluttering information?

thanks to all of you who showed interest in my query.

i recently talked to a guy at a pretty reputable exhaust shop and he told me he would weld up my exhaust for $120 as long as i put the 2055's in myself, and that sounds like a good price to me.

so now i just need to save up some money for the damn things. thanks for all your help.
