failed emissions in IL

here is the deal, just got my 88 GTA 350 TPI auto running from when emissions overheated motor and cracked radiator...so i had the heads redone cuz the valve seals were bad, gasket matched the heads and intake... i do have 1 vac. or egr line plugged and had a egr line crack in half then did a ghetto fix kinda job (gasket maker and then taped around it)...thats about it, new cap rotor and plug wires...
...........................hydrocarbons.................carbon monoxide
needed to get:----- 0.80....................................15.0

what i had:--------- 1.04....................................17.2

i'm kinda stuck and have no clue if the lines are whats making me fail....any help would be great......that or any ideas on a way to register my car to get out of emissions.....i kno classic is 25 years...and dont want to wait that long...... car is only driven for about 6 onths a year cuz its stored and i am starting to restore the body this year... oh i live in cook county if that matters at all...

thanx

Wow your numbers are real close. I was WAAAAYYYY off my first time. Like...disgustingly off. I guess having a corroded coil wire, bad/worn/original plugs, and an original cat don't work very well. I still have leaky fuel injectors. They are getting replaced in about a month or so when I swap intake/heads. I ended up passing after 4 times or so.

EGR shouldn't affect your numbers because that affects NOx more than anything. Try running higher grade gas and advancing your timing 2-3* to give the mixture a little bit more time to burn. Could try some of that "Guaranteed to Pass" stuff at the local parts store. Also, check the gapping on your plugs and make sure they are in good shape. If you have a high-output ignition system, try gapping them to .040" or so. I'd think that may make a little difference as well.

if you really love your car and plan on keeping it, get "show car" insurance. when i say "show car" it doesn't have to be a spectacular example of a thirdgen like "Kandies" car. it covers, weekend drag cars/autocross cars basically anything thats streetlegal. show car insurance will make it exempt from emissions. you can only put 6000 miles on it per year but you've stated that you only drive it six months out of the year so you don't have to worry about that. i got mine from AllState Insurance for $160 a YEAR! i think StateFarm also offers something like it. Full coverage up to $10,000 with AllState. the price also depends on a few things. my agent gave me a better deal because my entire family are policy holders with them, i have my 3 cars insured by them and i have home insurance with them probably the biggest factor in getting the price down is that i'm married and over 25. once i got the policy, i junked everything that had to do with emissions, except the cat. cleans up the engine bay nicely! but it can bite you in the *** in the future. if you have to sell the car, it'll take forever and a day to sell it without the emissions on it. only gearheads will know what they're looking at and know how to get around emissions and if they don't you can always tell them how to avoid emissions to seal the deal.

what i was thinking the prob was, is that my couple of vac. lines that are messed up maybe be messing with my fuel presure reg. and making car run a lil rich...but im going to have a friend look at it at his shop and have him re route all the vac. lines and egr lines...but *** son as i can, i am going to get that show car insurance as soon as i get more info on it...

thanx for all the replies guys
