need help Installing Headers on a TBI

Can anyone tell me what exactly the 8 small pipes coming off my exhaust manifolds are for. Do they have something to do with emissions, and if so, I was planning on putting a set of shorty headers in place of the crappy stock manifolds and am wondering what should be done with these pipes. Can they be removed and forgotten? Need a little guidance here.

yeah the are the AIR pipes. i am pretty sure they just come off with the manifolds, and if u repalce them with headers that don't have them u might have some extra piping on the car, also u won't pass testing if they have it where u live.

Thats not true, my 86 T/A had the pipes cut and crimped shut on the stock manifolds and I still passed emissions easily and MA is somewhat strict about stuff like that.

it could possibly pass the sniffer test, but it will NOT pass a visual examination in which all elements of the smog system must be present and appear to be operating correctly. Unless you know someone that will smog it without popping the hood

i think AIR was a failed emissions device by GM...

I don't know how it works, but I imagine every person doing a visual knows what the car came equipped with. Do they have some sheet that tells them what to check for?

No it wasn't. GM still uses it on cars today.

Alright, I did my homework. I went down to my local chevy dealer, where I used to work. The mechanic told me that being my car is an 89, in the state of new york, as long as the cat and muffler is connected , he'll pass me. There is no need for a computer hookup on these older cars. I've already put the hooker comp exhaust on, now I think i'll run some shorty headers, rather than the full I was going with. Thanks guys
