No Muffler. No Cat Next?

I cut my stock muffler off right at the bend into the inlet. Took it out for drive to see how it sounded and was very surprised. It was not loud at all, and sounded good, somewhat like the Flowmaster sound, yet smooth and deep. So Im gonna return the Super Turbo I bought.

How much louder ya think it will be if I replace the cat with a bullet muffler? Or just punch the insides out.

I ran my Camaro with a cardb' 350 open headers and with a Flowmaster 40. Both were way louder than my 305 with no muffler. Im just guessing its the cat thats still keeping it quiet

If your running the stock cat, it will be much louder.

My Flowmaster catback broke at the bend into the muffler one day, was dragging my dual tips on the highway--so I got under the car and cut it off right there, on the side of the road. Was quite pleased with the added noise! Then I threw on a glasspack for a while, sounded okay but not great, and didn't seem to flow too good (was louvered, not perforated.

Now I have cut the intermediate about 3' behind the cat, so there's just a straight pipe out--in the process eliminating some very restrictive bends--and put a turndown on it. It actually sounds pretty good, very loud but not obnoxious, actually a lot like my flowmaster, just louder. Power is improved too, and now the motor pulls harder at higher rpms (I have a K&N open element too), and when I hit the gas, there is almost no lag between induction sound and exhaust.

Planning to get the Flowmaster American Thunder system, or a Hooker catback, with 3" piping and a 3" in/out catalytic converter. For now the "straight pipe" is fun, and gives a mellow but punchy V8 sound with improved response.

On my 2.8 I had pacesetter headers, gutted cat, and 2.5" catback to a flowmaster 40. That thing screamed! I wish I had recorded it.
