Question about upgrading exhaust system
I've got an '86 SS that I'm wanting to upgrade the exhaust system for. I'm replacing from the cat converter back, and want to put at least 3" pipes on. My question is can I put a 3" cat converter and a 3" exhaust system without changing out the headers? We're welding the system on (with someone who has more experience), but I didn't know what other modifications, if any, would be required.
Thanks!

Yes you can thats the exact samething I did. I had the muffler shop cut out a little bit of the 2.25'' Ypipe and replace it with a reducer in front of the cat.

So I'll have to throw a reducer on from the headers to the cat? We're doing it in my boy's garage, as he's got welding and exhaust experience, but he usually works on hondas and SRT4s.

Yes you'll need a reducer. A good autoparts store should have it.
Also.. there's no such thing as an '86 Camaro SS. The SS left in '73 and didn't return until 1996.
