long tube headers
i am looking to install long tubes on my car. i am looking into the hooker 2010 coated since i am not a big fan of the hedmen headers. currently i have the edelbrock shorties going into the stock cat than american thunder cat-back exhaust with custom tips that exit thru the center of the car. since i will be installing the long tubes i need to get a pipe made up from the collector to the cat. i talked to mufflex and they told me for around 400 bucks they can make a custom y pipe that will conect to the stock cat. my question is since the headers are costing a little over 600 is it worth paying the 400 bucks to get the custom y-pipe made up or should i go with a different type of exhaust like true duel. is it going to make a difference going with long tube over the shorties. i have a 383 holly stealth ram set up with afr heads.

Well you're edelbrocks are more than likely 1 5/8" primaries with outside diameter is 3" (donut gasket eats up space). LTs will cause minor clearancing issues, but overall the 2210 look really nice I've owned 2 pairs of the ceramic coated ones. I picked the better and sold the other one.
I think the header flanges are nicer on the LTs also compared to my AFR 210cc head. But if you want to do a Y pipe to cats I would almost just say get a nice set of 1 3/4" ceramic shorties. It's going to be a nasty bend to get the long tubes to line up right. And you don't want to be looking like this last ebay auction I found... They oval cut and extended the far driverside pipe into a thing that appeared to look like a spaceship.
Mufflex is ~$275 for there Y pipe and it exits behind the trans pan, and it doesn't fit worth a crap from what I've heard. Most ppl end up taking to a shop and having it fitted and weld'd up custom for there car. So you can use that as a refrence on cost of your custom one.
OH BTW, you'll also need a ministarter for the LTs.

with a 383 go with the long tubes, but trash the y pipe and put duals on it. you will be suprised how much it will help you.

hmmm , I am curious . Have you dyno'd it yet with the shorties on it ? If so get s dyno done after the install . I really don't think you will see many gains. Remeber a longer primary simulates a skinnier diameter primary . So I think you will see improvements on the bottom end , nowhere else.
I'd just keep the shorties myself . Just my .02

i havent had it dynoed yet due to the ecm needs to be tuned so it runs like crap. the guy doing the ecm tuning is in PA about three hours away. if i get the car dynoed here it wont be much since it needs to be tuned bad. i was thinking of going with the LT's into a 4" y-pipe and putting a 4 x 3 reducer and than going into the stock cat. if i feel the need later on i can cut the reducer off and go with a 4" exhaust. currently i am running the flowmaster american thunder cat back
