headers and y-pipe question

i'm getting everything ready to put a LT1 in my car and i'm at the exhaust stage. i'm going to try the magnaflow catback #15620 and i'm debating the headers. i'm going with hedmans and i know the y-pipe hedman has fits the shorties with d-ports, but my buddies keep telling me that longtubes are better. what do you guys think? if i get longtubes, i can always get a y-pipe made, but if they aren't better, i don't want to go through the hassle of getting one made.

....also the y-pipe from hedman is 2.5 in...the headers have a 3 in collector and the catback is 3in and the cat is 3in in/out. will this effect the flow negatively?
