Need help for an 82 exhaust system...
As a couple may know, there's a 350 HO going in.. It had headers, but one was dented, so I't just oging to get new ones. My car, a mystery (a non original engine, feels like a 305, mech said likely a 350...) has exhaust manifold.. They collect on the passendger side, run a 3 inch tube back under the passenger seat, go into the mufflers, and come out as dual 2.5 or 3 inch pipes..
All the kits I've seen have been at earliest 86.. I'm looking for a header and exhaust combo for a motor that's apparently dyno'd at 345 (better than I expected) ish...
I searched, and one person seemed to caually comment that the later exhausts will bolt up fine, they just hang at different places, btu that all in all, theyll work..
Any comments, and even better, product plugs?

Ive got the 350HO in my 82z, and I just had my exhaust revamped. Its got Edlebrock shorties, custom y-pipe, 3in tubing no cat to a flowmaster 40series really the only thing I had done on my last trip to the exhaust shop was the custom y-pipe and had the cat cut off oh yeah and changed to turndowns instead of pipes out the rear. It sounds wicked and to me really opened it up, and its nice and tucked no hanging down, my exhaust guy said if I really want to go all out I should consider getting some long tubes but until then Im really happy with what Ive got now, no complaints.

The only differences between the years is the size and connection types of the pipes/cats/mufflers themselves. Of course, the first couple of years had that bizarre 2-muffler set-up, but don't worry yourself over that.
The routing is all the same (with the above-mentioned exception), hanging is almost identical, so as long as you are replacing the entire system, all you need to do is make it all of the same application. The "best" flowing, most-universal system the factory used was the '86-'90 TPI single-cat system. As long as whatever you order is made for that, it will all hook together. You might have to do a little fabricating of things like the A.I.R. system, if you keep that, and some minor hanger modifications.
I always recommend starting with Hooker 2055HKR headers (which include a great y-pipe). What you do after that is pretty much irrelevant.
