Need help picking exhaust!

I recently bought a 92 Z28 w/ stock exhaust and am having trouble picking an exhaust. This car will be a daily driver with little to no racing in the near future. I am not planning any huge upgrades(engine swap, turbo....) but am planning some smaller upgrades and want the exhaust to be good then too.I would like a small increase in fuel efficience and HP if I go w/ a cat back. I want a pretty loud sound, but not crappy sounding. Yet my biggest obsticle is money. I spent most of what I had on the car and will have to putt off the rest of my upgrades. I need something around 300 and be able to install it myself. I was thinking of going w/ a catco high flow cat and a muffler only, but don't think it will be suffiecent.

So any ideas would be greatly appriciated, weather it is a cat and muffler or full cat back w/ cat or without. I have putt in many differnet requirements so I know I will probubly not be able to fill them all.

Dolfan, i have a similiar car and am trying to decide what to do. Only diff is that I want to replace the whole system. My quandry is whether to keep smog equip. or not. It seems that all items perform better hp wise and price w/o smog. I have priced the catback systems from dynomax p/n 17493 from summit racing and the price was $169.95. imho, I believe, to get the most out of your car, you will have to do more than spend $300. There is a lot of info on this site about exhaust for this car including sound clips of different setups. you prolly have done a lot of research on this site, if you have not, i would really recommend it. Shopping in some of the most popular sites such as Jeg's and Summit will open your eyes as well. it seems to me that you will primarily need to formulate a plan for your car for the next few years and then purchase a system that you will be able to grow into. that and decide if you will want to keep the smog info. i am thinking about deleting a.i.r. from the exhaust, going with Hooker headers, going with dual cats into the above mentioned catback system, if it will work. I am not through doing research on this yet. Good luck with your car.

Dolfan, I know what you are saying about doing research. what helped me the most was to go to the vendors and tell them what you are looking for. See what they suggest. then come back and do more research on the site. What everyone talks about on this topic here will mean a lot more to you. the bits and pieces of info that I picked up prior to my talking with the vendors I could not neccesarily relate to until I got serious and took the suggestions of all on this site about exhaust. that and my car is a tbi, not to knock the site for any reason, because I have learned a lot about tbi from the site.but it seems to me that the real horsepower is not attained from a tbi setup. Your sig does not say what fuel supply system you are using and I do not know enough about 92 z28 to know what came with your car.

All 92 Z28s came with TPI (305 or 350). And you can get good power out of a TBI setup, the factory just didn't have those intentions for it.

My best suggestion would be to go to a car show and find a car with a nice exhaust tone that you like. Then ask the owner what brand it is and how he likes it. Then do some research and make a decision. You might even make a new friend too.

And all cat-back exhausts are direct bolt-ons that you can do in a few hours.
