How do you check your catalytic converter ???

Someone told me something about measuring the temperature before and after the cat ? And if the difference is less than 50 degrees it would be bad ?

I got a high temp infra red thermometer now, but where exactly do I measure ?

Before the cat, if so how far before ? Some places seems like there's tubing slipped over each other, making it a dual layer, i.e. cooler.

After the cat, if so how far after ?

Do I measure over the cat itself ? Trying to measure in between the cat and the cat's heat shield ?

And what are the results, temp wise, supposed to be ?

Drove from downtown to my house, and both readings seemed somewhat similar, which is why I'm asking. Smog check/registration is due for me this October, so if I need a new cat, I need to plan it now.

Any advice would be most helpful, thanks.

I don't know about checking the temp, but typically if your exhaust smells like rotten eggs, then the cat is bad.

Remove it from the car and use a prybar / rebar and a hammer to remove everything from the inside , and inspect all the pices.Sweep them all up and place in a trash can.Install a pice of pipe inside the housing and reinstall.Life time warranted to never clog up / restrickt exhaust flow for the life of the car!
THIS IS A JOKE DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!!
I had to do it!

Warm the engine up real good. Like hold the throttle at 2500 rpm for 3 minutes.
Then take a temperature reading directly in front of the converter and directly behind it.
The exhaust should be 30-50 degrees hotter coming out of the converter. Just to keep it simple, this is due to the excess fuel being burned inside the converter. This is the basic function of the converter to reduce emissions. If the converter is hotter at the front this means its plugged, and if there is very little difference in temperature the converter is not working and should be replaced.

Ah ok, thanks.

Yeah I think I did it wrong, had the car sitting for a few minutes, and I also tried it with the engine off. Will try it again tomorrow.
