smog pump removal

I was planning to fit hooker 2055 headers with air tubes removed, then ditch the smog pump.
Cats already gone as they are not a requirement till 92 over here & was gutted when i bought it.

Been reading the posts & now am worried about ill effects this might have.
previous posts seem 50 50 on whether this will affect the egr & ecu.

I have a 350tpi with stage 2 zz4 heads on the way, corvetteplenum mega ported plenum & slp runners coming. big mouth intake & a zz9 cam.

Please can someone clear up how i can remove the pump without causing ill effects.

Also think i'm going to need the prom reprogrammed to take advatage of the mods & want to know if anyone can offer pre burnned chips so i have at least got a starting point. not sure about taking that on myself.

cheers

It was my understanding that TPI cars need the smog pump. But if you're getting the PROM reprogrammed, then you could probably program the computer to overlook the missing smog pump.

There are a lot of posts on this subject but info is conflicting, some say it can be done with no fuss others that it will affect the performance & ecu.

Can i not just leave the egr inplace & remove the pump?
I thought it only pumped the air into the headers & further downstream in exhaust. does it have a pipe to the egr as well?

If you don't have visual inspection just remove it. It won't make you fail an emissions test and it won't make your car not run. It wont effect your gas milage either.

Its not connected to the EGR.

Removal of smog pump/egr on lg4 305 carb?

The smog pump on my car has been removed by virtue of eliminating the belt that runs it. I bought it this way and I plan to just remove the entire unit and brackets when it warms up outside. I do get the check engine light after about 5-10 minutes of running the car but I don't know what error code it is. You guys think this is related? My car is has a carb and I plan on getting a non-egr manifold when I rebuild the motor. Any issues with this you guys think?

I removed my smog pump 305TPI and have not had any codes or drivability issues. It's pretty useless.

Ok, I just recently took off ALL smog/emmissions equiptment on my 87 GTA, im running headers with the A.I.R Tubes on them...

Here's what I did:

I first unplugged the 2 conncectors on my A.I.R Box and drove around town for a while, it didnt throw any kind of a code, or effect the way the car drove.

I then went home, started pulling off any hoses connected to the smog pump, and the A.I.R tube that goes to where the Converter is supposed to be.

Once that was done, the only things left are the actual smog pump itself, and the metal A.I.R tube, along with the tube that goes behind the back of the motor.

I plugged up the A.I.R tubes on my headers by capping them with threaded pipe caps, simple as that.

Next, was to simply remove the pump and any brackets connecting to it.

To this day, no codes, or drivability problems.

well my 305 is carbed but when i put headers on mine i totally ripped out the a.i.r. (smog) pump out and i noticed that most of the egr tubes(the hard ones) had already broken so i went out to o'reillys bought a egr block off plate and hight temp silicon sealer and took out all the emissions control stuff but if u have the stock valve covers with the pvc valve on them i would leave some of the emissions stuff on there but i have gm performance parts valve covers so im good except it seems like ive lost about 2 mph but ive been driveing it alot harder since the headers went on
well i hope this helped u out

I have removed the smog pump on 2 350 TPI cars. Both cars ran fine without them and there was no noticeable increase or decrease in performance. I also removed all of the a.i.r lines too. The best part is that I can actually see an engine now!!!

I've also been wondering about the smog equiptment to. Like sweeneyuk said, there are alot of posts on it (I've been searching and read up alot on it), but they are conflicting and tend to go in different direction on almost every other post. Anyways I've decided to yank all the stuff off, b/c either way I will eventually reprogram the chip, but I was wondering how long it would take to pull all the stuff out? I'm going to be swapping over to nonAIR headers, so I'm also goign to be removing the manifolds off.
Thanks John

You will probably need a dremel with a cut wheel bit to cut the air tubes off. It took me and a friend a few hours to cut all of them off. The trick is to cut them off somewhat close to the manifold so that way you can get a wrench over the remaining pipe and loosen the fittings that connect to the manifold. And then when You have all the manifold plugs out You have to plug them with 1/4 inch pipe adapters from a hardware store. The smog pump is pretty easy to take out too. Just make sure You get the right belt after You remove it!
