dual cats

Im new to this website so here goes... I have a 91 gta with stock dual cats. My cats are broke right at the back so I need to replace them for inspection. Does anyone have the stock dual cat system for sale or does anyone know where I can get a new one?

Re: dual cats

you wanna save a crap load of $? Just go to summitracing.com. Buy 2 cats with the right inlet/outlet size, then go to a custom exhaust location and have them tossed in. I GARONTEE you will save over $100 EASY

Re: dual cats

I believe Magnaflow has a direct replacement setup, designed to attach to stock manifolds.

Two problems I see with that:

1) Most places won't install a cat that you brought in.

2) Letting a shop like that touch your car is sure to cost you at least $200. If the cats are universal type, it'll cost you even more.

Shop I go to does stuff like that for $20 cash. Probably $40 for dual cats.

Cut out the old ones, adapt and weld in the new ones? Including A.I.R. tubes?

For anyone off the street?

Re: dual cats

Same here. Lous Custom Exhaust around here in Boston. I got my old shorties welded to my pipes (dual cats), new Random Tech cats that I brought in, welded in, including air tubes and all, AND installed weld in SFC, including all new pipe to the cat back, rewelded all old connections and fixed my cat back matting connector leak.... Cost=$212.

For just putting in cats, maybe cost $40-60.

Sounds like an exceptionally good deal. Here in my rural community of 1800, cost would be considerably more.

Re: dual cats

If you live where it is hard to find a place to do work and you own a thirdgen. Invest in a Welding handbook, $12, and a MIG welder $200. Then for the rest of your life, you can do floor pans, Relocation brakets, 100% custom exhausts or patch up jobs, ANYTHING you want for free.

Thats what I did, and I DO have great deals like stated above around me. I just knew that I had rust on my floors and was going to want a bigger exhaust down the road. Best $ savings I could have ever done.

Re: dual cats

I have a mig welder but im not to swell at it... do you think a bad weld job would mess up how the exhaust will sound?

Re: dual cats

NO.

Holes will, just weld them shut.

Listen go to my CD site through my sig. You will see the work I did with 100% ZERO auto training in any way, and I am in a 1 car garage that is tiiigghhtt. Very hard to work with. I am no expert by any means and I made a true dual setup, installed a 6 point roll bar and fixed 6 rust holes/problem areas I had. All with 0 training and the car has about 1600 miles on it now pushing aorund 400 HP and has 0 problems with my welds.

Go nuts, LEARN a new skill. You will be soooo happy that you did.

Cutting out the olds ones is easy takes all of 2 minutes, nothing to really adapt as long as you get the same size, and same deal with the A.I.R.

No probably not for anyone off the street.. but I am not a regular where I get special pricing. They just tend to cater to "car guys". They spread pipe ends for me for nothing the first time I went there and that's all I needed.

Why is this? I had Midas install my cat and catback. I had no cat when I brought the car in. I also brought the Catco cat with me.

EPA crap. They are responsible for verifying the work they do does not degrade the emissions equipment. Some places may do it if they are reasonably confident the part you are bringing in is proper for the application. The local Midas here told me point blank they would not install a customer furnished cat. Another local independent shop told me they had to know the part was right for the application, or had to have the cat certified (not exactly sure how that is done, but the cost they quoted was about the same as a new cat).

Doing your own welding makes a lot of sense.
