Need help, What is this thing, and what does it do?
Alright, me and my dad were putting on my new headers in my camaro, and the engine still had the stock exhaust manifold, we noticed that this black box had hoses that was conecting to the exhaust manifold, and there were two sensor wires coming off the box, my question is, what is this black box? what does it do, and would my car act funny if we take it all out, and cut the wires (probly not smart to do) I do have a book that would explain what this thing is, but I've been searching all week for this book, and cant find it. it has three hoses off of it, one hose was connected to the right side exhaust manifold, and the other was the right one, and there was a third one, but we dont know where that one goes.
anyway, to make better sense what I mean, heres a picture of what Im talking about this little black box, thank you!

That's the Air Injection Diverter. It's connected to the back of the AIR pump(right below it), and it distributes air to the exhaust manifolds and the cat.

ok, that sound familiar. (heard about it, but I guess I wasnt paying attention then :-[
would it be bad if I took the whole thing out? like get rid of the hoses, get rid of the box, and the sensor wires?

I believe the AIR system is a federal requirement, which would mean it's "illegal" to remove it. But many people do it anyway without any negative effects regarding performance. And if your state doesn't require emissions testing or visual inspections, then you're not likely to ever face a situation where it's a "legal" issue.
Some people remove it to "clean-up" the engine bay, whereas others remove it believing they'll gain a significant amount of power or performance. But the amount of gain is minimal, so it's probably not worth the efforts for that reason.
So it's up to you and your dad, but I'd suggest you make sure of Montana's requires before you do anything.

I dont really know the emissions testing or visual inspections, but I never had one here.
The police around this town (most of them quit, its just the border patrol, and the sheriffs) dont really go out anymore, unless some one calls it in, but most the people dont bother calling in something, unless it was something to do with the major stuff (killing.. drugs.. stealing...) but we dont have any of those around here much, which is pretty good.
Sadly alot of people around here can run around in town with just straight headers and the police wont bother looking at the car.
Thanks for the info, I was sorta worried if it would mess the computer up.

Unless it's a one owner car it can't be proven who removed it. Only punishment is cost to replace.
