Too restrictive of an exhaust?

I currently have a 383 that puts out 470 horse and 450 ft lbs of torque at the motor. I currently have an edelbrock shorty's with an edelbrock cat back. Its not a true dual exhaust, but its a 3 inch pipe from the headers to the muffler which then splits into 2.5 inch dual after the muffler. Just want to know if this would be to restrictive. Thanks guys

Was the engine dyno'd at 470 HP? If so, what exhaust was used to obtain that?

You're probably not making 470 HP with that exhaust, though.

Re: To restrictive of an exhaust

It was on an engine dyno. With the shorty headers but not the rest.

I assume it didn't got to a single 3" pipe, then.

That's pretty good power for shorties. Most people wouldn't believe they'd do it.

Re: Too restrictive of an exhaust?

Yes its restrictive. Edelbrock's 1 5/8" headers are not good, not to mention they're too small for a 383 anyway. Do a search on the Exhaust forum for Dyno Don Headers and send him a PM.

Re: Too restrictive of an exhaust?

I use this car quite a bit on the street, and occasionally at the strip. So I was wondering what headers would fit without having ground clearance issues. I also wanted to make sure that the headers would just bolt right up like the shorties without having to take the engine out.
So would the 3 inch exhaust from the headers to the muffler, be to restrictive or will that would out ok. Thanks guys

Re: Too restrictive of an exhaust?

My headers and y-pipe with your 3" cat back would be fine.
Most of us here use that setup.

Re: Too restrictive of an exhaust?

What kind of headers do you have for our cars, and do they have any ground clearance issues, and can they be installed without taking the engine out. Thanks Dyno Don

Dyno Don Are you shorty's 1 3/4 with a 3 inch collector, that would be something I am very interested in.
