Hey guys, i have a 1983 camaro and i want a new muffler for it. I need a single in dual out and from what i have gathered, the Flowmaster Super 40 is a nice deep aggressive sound. Any opinions on another brand or anything that i should use??

super 40 is not a transverse muffler. i'm guessing that u have a stock routed exhaust???
Wait, what do you mean by stock routed? I have where my headers go into a single pipe with a catalytic converter, then it goes back into my muffler (not sure what aftermarket brand) and then duals are ran out of the muffler. (single in dual out)
Member
that is a stock routed system.
so with that said u won't be able to install the spr 40's w/o going true duals.
so if u want a stock style muffler thats good, check out magnaflow or spintec. there are many more out there.

I can't even use the super 40s with a single in dual out system?

you need the flowmaster 80 series. Its a muffler specifically made for these cars.
Most 1in 2out mufflers have the outlets on the opposite side of the inlet. Our cars need the outlets on either side, and the inlet on the passenger side next to the outlet.

Not necessarily. A single in/single out works much better. You just need to get used to the look of a single pipe.

Something like that won't work? Thats the example of a single in dual out Super 40 from the flowmaster website.

i had spoken to flowmaster a while back and thats when they told me that the only muffler i can use is the 80 series b/c it is designed for our cars. unless i did what Kevin said and go single in/out with 1 tip, i was not feeling that at all. i was pretty dissappointed too. which is one of the reasons i went true duals.
but even if u went duals i don't think spr 40's would fit w/o sacraficing ground clearence. but u could go duals and put on some 1 chamber flows or some slim line spintechs. right now i am running dynomax bullets. and they sound awesome, but that was while it was dumped at the axle. i still haven't got it back from the from the exhaust shop. (should have it today or tomorrow) and here it run with full exhaust and bullets, to determine if i like it.
then i wil decide if i like it . if i don't like it i am goin with 1 chamber flows they sound amazing with a dual set-up
here is a clip of 1 chamber flows, but it is dumped. imagine how throaty it would be with a full exhaust.

super 40s sound real nice but i recently upgraded to super 44s they sound even better
IM not trying to ignore what you guys are telling me, its just that the 80 series is too quiet for me. Im hoping to get something that is more aggressive, throatier, and classic. I want the glasspack sound in a muffler that will fit my camaro.

look into the cherry bomg muffler. i believe they make one for our cars. they sound really nice.

Both exits are on the same end of that muffler. Our cars have outlets on each end.Originally Posted by bigreeder

If annoyingly loud to the general law-abiding citizenry is what you're after, the Vortex is the right choice.Originally Posted by bigreeder
the vortex? Hey guys, which one of these two is louder and more aggressive? Cherry Bomb Vortex or Flowmaster 80 Series? From what i can tell, the vortex is louder, but i want you guys's opinion.

"Aggressive" is a matter of interpretation. The dual Vortex on the 396 make it sound like an approaching Huey.

If loud is what you want, go with the new style Edelbrock setup. It is louder than the crossflow Flowmaster I took off. I was actually wanting to quiet the car down a bit, that's why I went with the Edelbrock... but they changed it on me. I had put the RPM series catback on two previous cars and loved it, but now they apparently only sell an "SDT" catback. It does have nice polished tips now, though.
Hey guys, could we use Flowtech Purple Hornies on our cars? Like if i just bolted them on from the headers?

definitely go with some sort of flowmaster package. I think they sound the best

I agree flowmaster does have a great sound but its the muffler that 85% of muscle cars have. I went with the Spintech because they have a deap sound like flowmasters but sound different enough that people ask what they are. my .02
