Mine sprung a leak last year, so it was a pretty easy decision to take it off when it interfered with the headers. Just bypass the whole thing with a longer heater hose near the passenger side front suspension arm (two hoses go to a steel line that runs behind the harmonic damper to the other side of the engine). Remove all the hoses and hard lines (they bold to special oil pan bolts) and the oil filter.
When the oil filter is off, the cooler is held on by a very large hex nut under the threads for the oil filter. This is actually a clever adapter tube that holds it all on, just remove the nut/tube and it all comes off. When the oil cooler/adapter tube is off, the oil filter just spins right onto the block where the adapter came off. DONE!

thanks man yeah we did all that but the two bolts up in the adapter have to be cut so the oil filter will go all the way on!! what did you end up having to do with the #7 plug? did you have a problem with the spark plug boot rubbing on the header?

Yes, #7 plug is right against the header tube. I put a heat sleeve on it, so I hope it doesn't burn through, but it's not exactly a great solution, but it'll have to do.
