Car back on the road need some exhaust work...
I want to replace the pipe after the cat with new 3" and put some type of muffler on it with it dumped behind the rear bumper. I like how it sounds right now. It is PERFECT as far as how loud it is at idle and WOT. I just want to clean the sound up a bit and make it a little cleaner sounding but still sound really mean.
What muffler would you guys/gals suggest for what I'm looking for?
I was thinking a single chamber or a type of race muffler. That sound about like what I would want?

Your basically looking for the old SLP loudmouth exhaust systems. but some kits like the flowmaster single outlet use a 3" in and 3" out single entrance/exit muffler (40series) and runs in the stock location. it wont be as loud as a glass pack or the mufflers above but it would be a direct replacement for your system, its 3" so it will make more power, and it will give u a nice deep tone. i have one on my 307TPI 86TA, it also has the edlebrock headers/ypipe and high flow 3" cat.

You basically have the exact setup that my car currently has. The car use to have a flowmaster muffler that was i think a 40 before it got cut off. I would just run that muffler but the baffles have rusted out of it wile it has been setting.
Will those glasspacks or the spiral flow mufflers cause the exhaust to crackle?

I think I'm going to have the old FM put on temporarily to pass inspection. I'm short on cash now so I'm going to have to save for a new exhaust. The muffler looks only a year or two old on the out side but the baffles are rusted out on the inside. Keep the suggestions coming though guys because as soon as I get the money I'm getting it done.

well thats not my setup. my HSR 383 headman Lts, 3" true dual exhaust (mandrel bent) 3" summit xpipe and 3" force mufflers with turndowns... its the meanest sound ive ever heard on a 3rd gen... the ypiped cars just dont sound the same.
then i wouldnt change it. i would just find another 3" muffler that would fit your liking. i think the new thrush mufflers are pretty good ( i assume) but there are other types to look at and they are super cheap like 37$ each. i cant believe what some ppl pay for a muffler like borla etc its insane.
it really depends on the muffler as far are the crackling. glass packs usually have a perferation on the inside... looks like tabs bent out but they are cupped and only face one way, if the perforation "cup" faces the exhaust flow then it will catch some of the gases/sound and will change the tone slighty and act more like a muffler by passing the catched gases/sound and putting it through the fiberglass packing. this will give u the best tone IMO. but switching it around so it faces the other way will give u slightly better flowing but it will prob have that "crackling" sound that no one likes. ive only had experience with glasspacks so idk bout the spiral flows.
you could have a custom peice bent from 3" tubing for like 60$ and then buy a muffler and it would be less if the pipe is fine that fits to the cat and runs to the axle where u hacked it off. theres a place near me that uses 14 gague THICK tubing and they are cheap
if u want a new catback then get the cheapest 3" kit u can get. then i would choose the muffler i wanted. honestly i love my FORCE muffler but they are no longer offered, if i want to replace them i will prob go with the new THRUSH ones. i still have my AFTERBURNERS by flowtech and they where AWSOME!!!! i loved them too but i didnt like the case design (had a lip that would catch on stuff) but they are great sounding mufflers and were cheap like 37.
if its rusted out its prob bc of water sitting in the muffler thats why if it sits take it off or heat it to evaporate the water out. all the 3" kits are basically the same aluminized 16 gauge exhaust tubing.

Sounds like the glasspack might be something I would like it if it's put on the right direction. Who are the Thrush mufflers made by?
I thought the car had a catback kit on it but it doenst look like the one you linked or any of the ones I have found. It is a single 3" in and dual out(not sure on the out size) but both tail pipes exit on the same side. If it was a kit them they probably dont make it anymore. That exhaust has been on it for 15 years at least but 10 of those years the car has been setting.

i believe that was the old SLP setup or corsa or something. i hated the way it looked lol.
not sure but heres the link to there mufflers. i would get the welded aluminum coated/ stainless. i like the ones that are second down and they look EXACTLY like my FORCE mufflers... they kinda sound like them too. these are in summit for like 37$ click the sound clip. they sound pretty bad @ss.

honeslty the single 3 exit is prob more efficent than the stock design due to it having to flow backwards in a tight bend to get to the other exit. the sound is the same bc its still coming from a single 3" pipe. and it would be easier to hide up like u said. i would just buy the muffler and get a couple U or J bends from summit and weld something together and run it the way YOU want to run it. i hate how the exhaust companies charge so much for a catback... its a single run pipe with a bend over the axle. its simple. and if u still have the old one u can just use that as a template. cut, tack weld, cut, tack and then weld and ur done. u can also hide the exit pipe from the muffler so its completly hidden. i hate the pipes that stick out the back, make the car look hickish
