i hate flowmasters

I have dynomax ultra flo's I really like the sound. I find flowmaster really low and loud. The ultra flo's are much quieter at low rpm but really rip and have that old nascar tone at higher rpm.

Re: i hate flowmasters
I notice that alot of people say they're too loud... I have an '87 350TPI with headers/flowmaster 40's 'american thunder' exhaust and it is overall pretty quiet! Maybe its because of the smaller cam, but most carbed 305's are louder

Yeah it's the cam. As soon as you change that or get it to really breath it will get much louder. Had that same setup on my 305 and as soon as I did the heads, cam, intake and went with 10 to 1 cr that lil motor sounded like crap with that system. Did me a custom terminator box with dual magnaflows out back and the sound made me want to make love to that car.... well you know. lol

Re: i hate flowmasters
I have a flowmaster on my truck. All I can say is (IMO) they're trash. I lost power when it was installed. The droning noise is annoying and they rust out easily. Chamber muffler are only tuned for sound, not flow. As we all know air doesn't like to make sharp turns witch hurts flow. I get a muffler mostly for performance, not just sound. Flowmaster's sound isn't worth the performance loss. IMO.

It's a 40 series. I have another muffler waiting, Magnaflow. I just waiting to get my custom Y-pipe and exhaust made by BigDog Chevy.

Re: i hate flowmasters
Well I don't know what Flowmaster would call their top of the line or better muffler but as far as flow and durability there are better and cheaper ones out there too. 2.5" two chamber Flowmasters @ 28" is 249 CFM and the three chamber is 229 CFM. Regular old Magnaflow that is cheaper and made of stainless steel flowed 284 CFM it wasn't the highest flowing muffler but it is made of stainless and the sound is just right but also cheaper than flowmaster's cheapest mufflers. The only logical reason a person would by a Flomaster over other better mufflers to me is if they want that Flowmaster sound which is perfectly fine. But if I can have something better and cheaper I'm all for it. Here's some info but there's plenty more out there.

Re: i hate flowmasters
Lol, the 50, 60 and the 70 series are 3 chamber mufflers. 40 and 44 series are 2 chamber and 80 seriers is a crossflow. I've had the 40, 50, 70 and the 80 series. So to get a better muffler from Flowmaster than the 40 or 44 series you have to sacrifice performance right( 3 series flow less )? You are right sound is a personal preference but the thread says I hate flowmasters not I love Flowmasters. I got off the bandwagon when I found better/cheaper mufflers out there. But that's my opinion.

Re: i hate flowmasters
ive had flowmsters on two cars and here is my two cents i had an 83 camaro crossfire 305 with a 40 series on it and i really hated the sound and the flow on it was horrible i took it off and replaced it with 12 in cherry bomb and the sound wasnt no better but let me tell you once it was broke in it was one of the loadest cars ive ever heard. i currently have a 88 firebird formula with a 305 and it has 80 siries flowmaster on it with dual out and i wouldnt trade it for any thing in the world and i think it flows just fine (although i do have headers on it to so im sure that helps) its very agressive even at idol and load but not to load unless i run wot then it screams (have set off car alarms) is in my opion i really think it just depends on what flowmaster you go with the old saying is true you get what you pay for you buy a cheap 40 seris you get a cheap muffler!

Re: i hate flowmasters
yes its was and notice the was cause it is now gone and im droping in a 350 wich is no performer but is around 320hp with the few things done to it. but i did like the 305 that lil guy would take a beating but with im wanting to build this winter i just fealt a 305 wasnt going to cut it in the long run. and im going to keep my same flowmaster set up on it cause i really do like them but this is just my opinion i really feel mufflers is just somthing you go with what you like every one has different taste in what they want

Re: i hate flowmasters
Well I feel you on the 350 build. If you put a decent cam in it, headers and have at least 9.5 to 1 CR on it the system will be much louder. That's one of the problems I had, as long as the setup was stock or the motor was low on output the flowmasters were not that bad ( as far as sound). But as soon as you start changing things and opening things up they (in my opinion) were too loud. When I started getting tickets and setting off car alarms with a 4.3 V6 and a BMW straight 6 that's when I got feed up. lol
Re: i hate flowmasters
I love flowmasters. I had the 80 series on my 84 TA before putting 40 series 2.5" true duals with long tubes after dropping in a pretty nasty 383. I have the 3" in/out 80 series on my current 94z and with the hot cam and higher CR pistons it sounds mean as hell too. Deep and grumpy. I have yet to experience a "raspy" Flowmaster on anything I have put one on.
On a side note......FIRST POST back on this forum YaY! Later CZ28.com. Hope you guys don't mind a 4th gen'r hanging around for a while.
