X pipe sucks
A warning for you all.
I have been running an H-pipe, or crossover pipe, for almost 8 years with stainless mufflers.
The crossover was patched up so many times, and I am not ready yet to go full stainless, so I just had a Dynomax pre-fab X-pipe installed.
I was hoping for some minor performance gains, but mostly just wanted to balance the motor more.
I figured at worst it would get me through winter.
I hate it.
I run Flowmaster Stainless Delta flow mufflers, and have always loved their throaty sound. Sometimes it was hard to tell if you heard the pipes or the open aircleaner 4 barrel.
Now, it sounds like a 305 with a 2 barrel. I can hardly hear the shift points and when I tried to open it up in the rain it still sounds the same.
Plus, the idle rumble is gone and the highway drone is worse...and higher pitched.
It was wet today so I could not check what it sounds like @ WOT, but I am sure I will not like it.
After winter, after the road salt and such, I will have it changed back to a simple crossover pipe.
I miss my sound already.

Re: X pipe sucks
Its commonly known that an X-pipe will generate a higher pitched more exotic sound. The H pipe always keeps the tone low and generates the classic muscle car sound. I have an X pipe on my Camaro and it sounds evil, I love it. On a more mild engine in a truck I'm sure it would not sound near as good.

While I appreciate the fact your engine is more than mine, I want to point out that it is a 355HP 350
So you can probably understand why I miss the sound I lost
Now it's much more a sleeper, but it used to save me having to show that I won't be passed on the right, if you know what I mean
I have noticed it is a bit more responsive though

Re: X pipe sucks
Well the problem is the pitch that the X generates. It is much easier for mufflers to deaden a high pitched sound than it is to deaden a lower pitched sound. The X-pipe generates a high pitched scream and the mufflers are doing their job by killing it. The low tone generated by the H-pipe is hard for the mufflers to kill, so you still get to hear it. If you want loud, mufflers and an x-pipe are mutually exclusive parts unless the mufflers are really small. I've got the little 4" round 14" long magnaflows on my car and it is PLENTY loud to get the point across, but the mufflers aren't really big enough to do that much.

Re: X pipe sucks
put more motor in front of that x-pipe and you'll grin ear to ear. on top of that, it smooths out the tone, and general engine operation throughout the rpm range, making throttle response much more crisp and well...reponsive!
i have a 3" dual x-pipe system with dynomax bullets. it sounds flat out nasty with 11.5:1 and a 232/240 cam. ok, being an lsx and a different firing order has a lot to do with that too, lol!

Re: X pipe sucks
lsx is going to be 2 different things
But agree with what was said above. Xpipe vs Hpipe there really isnt much of a performance gain but does change the sound. You can try different mufflers or go back to an H if you want that old sound back
