2.5" exhaust manifolds = 2.5" y pipe?

Engine: LB9 - 5.0 TPI
Transmission: 700R4
Axle/Gears: 2.73, LSD
2.5" exhaust manifolds = 2.5" y pipe?
I need to order a y pipe. The manifolds that were given to me have an inside diameter of 2.5". Does this mean I will need a 2.5" y pipe or is 2.5" just the outlet diameter of the y pipe?
