Benefits of upgrading exhaust?

I'm just wondering if with a pretty much bone stock 305 tbi, would adding on headers and possibly dual exhaust make all that much of a difference in power? I'm looking for some straightforward power gain, but I don't wanna spend all kinds of money on 305 specific stuff because I want to drop in a 350 at some point. I've also heard dual exhaust is tough to do on these cars, and I was wondering if the gain from it would be worth the trouble?

You will see some slight power from these mods~but dont expect huge gains. From what I read and heard its pretty expensive and time consuming to build a really fast 305.

thats what I've heard too. Which is why I want to put in upgrades that would eventually swap to a 350 with no problems. any rough estimates on power gain horsepower/torque-wise? I just dont know if the cost to do the upgrades is worth the gain.

if it fits a on a 305,then it also fits on a 350. (except pistons)

cam, headers, intake manifold, throttlebodys, distributors, all the same.pretty much any bolt on will transfer over.

didn't know you could swap a cam from a 305. thats good to know. everything else, sure, but I'm looking for biggest bang for my buck and I've always heard exhaust is the way to go for that. I'm just wondering how big the "bang" will be for my money. I'm pretty strapped for cash, so the exhaust upgrade would be, (at least for me), a pretty big investment.

you will barely feel the difference. Exhaust has been beaten to death as a topic and there are tons of threads if you search.

If you want seat of pants feel then go for new gears and get rid of the 2.73:1 gears.

I slapped on headers onto my 3rd gen simply because it makes it much easier to replace the spark plugs and the stock exh manifolds are pathetic.

And FWIW, my modified 4th Gen LT1 runs long tubes and a 3 inch single catback from an off road y pipe and it's more than sufficient so you need not worry about a modified 350 unless you get real radical.

check out streetsideauto and look at the dynomax cat back. streetside has free shipping and with the rebate the cost is a little over $120 to your door.

you can then get a set of hedmans and a y pipe and you have a decent little system
