Heat shields?

Car: 1987 IROC Z28 Camaro
Engine: HSR L98
Transmission: 700R4
Axle/Gears: stock
Heat shields?
I have true duals with Chamber Powersticks that are in the stock location of where the original muffler was (below the gas tank).
The original heat shield pan or whatever was never put back in place partially due to me breaking some parts breaking and it not fitting anymore.
Is the shield absolutely nessessary? If so I guess im going to be fabricating up a new one this weekend.
