Install O2 bung in a Header that didn't come with one?

I got a set of Heddman headers and Y-Pipe on my Iroc right now with a non computer carb setup. I am going to be putting a TPI engine in so I need to have the O2 sensor.

Will I be able to use my headers and just have an exhaust shop cut the hole and mount an O2 bung for me?

If I can do that, where is the most optimal place to have them install it?

One last thing provided I can use these. While I have the headers out what is a good thing to coat them with, they have that surface rust on them(besides jethot)?

I don't know about the coating on the rusted headers, maybe if you sand 'em down a bit first...

As far as the O2 bung: do one of two things (from my recent experience, with my Hedmans):

(1) with the driver's header bolted in place, mark *exactly* where the O2 sensor could stick out and not hit anything (ie the crossmember) and make sure the exhaust shop welds the bung in exactly that spot. (I made the mistake of doing one of those "about right here should be fine" -- -- now there is a pipe plug blocking that misplaced bung ).
OR
(2) Just take the car in and have them weld in a bung from below, with the car on their lift... that way, there's no way they can put it in the wrong place. You may have to reroute and tie down the O2 sensor connector/pigtail and the water temp sensor connector with it...

Good luck!

i have the coated headers and the regular headman y-pipe, i put my sensor in the y-pipe on the drivers side, that little extension that slips to the rest of the y-pipe

Everybody is saying to put it right below where the primaries come together on the header, about 2" or so up from the flange.

Do you get any codes with it installed in your y-pipe? Is there a specific reason you put it there. I just want to make sure I get accurate readings and I am not sure if this depends on where the sensor is located.

It shouldn't make any real difference if the O2 sensor is a few inches lower, in the driver's side y-pipe adapter, for the O2 measurement. You obviously want to consider positioning, though (don't want it sticking straight down, could get coated w/nastiness and pelted with rocks from the road...).
