I have, indeed, run the smog pump to the cat converter full time with NO backfiring or bad side effects. I had nothing but a pipe and check valve between the smog pump and the cat.
Now, if you run the smog pump to the A.I.R. pipes that feed air to the exhaust ports, THEN you will hear a lot of burbling when you let off the gas, but I never heard any backfiring. But, full time air to the exhaust ports will kill performance. What you could do there is to remove the A.I.R manifold, get a 1/4" drill bit and use it to pull out the tube extensions. Then put the manifold back on. Those tube extensions stick way into the exhaust port and are quite thick. That will help the heads to flow better and still maintain outward appearances.
