passing without a cat in NJ

hey guys my dads freind has a 86 trans am 5spd 305 carbed engine with 5,000 original miles on the engine and 30,000 on the car. all it needs is paint and a headliner. i coudl of had this car if he wasn't such a picky basterd lol. well the only thing he has done to his car is a gutted cat and he said that with a gutted cat i should have no prob goin threw inspection because my computer will lean everythignout and make it fine. also he said even if it wasn't gutted there wouldn't be anything left so cats don't matter. is this complet bull or do u think its possible? i live in new jersey so has any1 here went threw emisions with a gutted cat. thanks

Well, the DMV inspection has no way of knowin weather you cat is hollow. When I took my vert, it passed by 1/4 of what it COULD have been. Thats with the cat. Im guessing that it still would have easily passed with a gutted one too... BTW, alot of places around here charge alot more than $20 to pass cars.
