exhaust decisions- need to make some!

Hello, well I just finished installing a new fuel pump and fuel filter in my '91 Camaro, that is a job I can confidently say I will NEVER do again. It's just worth it to pay a mechanic in that case. Ugh! Anyway, I wound up sawing off the exhaust just before the bend in front of the rear axle. Whoever the previous owner was did a hack job on the back with bad welds and pipes hanging all over, so I just ripped it all out. I realized that I don't even have mufflers, just a single exhaust that splits to two (and finally four pipes) out the back. Anyway, the cat looks to be in just barely decent shape, but I'm considering what exhaust to buy. I wouldn't mind getting a nice set of hedders and full dual exhaust, but I'm out of a job now, so I'm thinking I should just get whatevers cheapest until I'm getting a paycheck again. Maybe I'll upgrade later. Probably the cheapest thing to do is pick up a glass pack or some muffler and stick it onto the cat now.

But then again, I want to make the upgrade... if it isn't crazy expensive, maybe I should take this opportunity to throw some hedders on there. If I go this route then I will probably want to at least install them myself, which means I need headers that don't require pulling the engine or a week long project to install. Prices for a new cat are like $200 from midas (or wherever) and around $50 on ebay. What do you think?

Finally, I had the engine changed from a 305 to a 350. I assume this means it has 350 heads on it now, and so would require that parts I order be for a 350- at least in this case. Can someone recommend an affordable set of hedders (and/or pipes/cat) that I can install without too much hassle? Thanks!

BTW: Do I even NEED a catalytic converter?

You need a cat. if you are in an emmissions state, so check your local laws for that. If you want one, i have a pretty much new aftermarket one, ill sell it to you cheap. If you want to go headers, i recomend Heddman Torq-Step hedders made for 82-92 camaros, and even more i recomend getting the ceramoc coating. latest prices are $200 for non coated, and around $400 for coated. I have a set of these on my car, they look great, and the only problem i had was the engine vibrated some of the bolts out. I personally went with a custom bent true dual system, and love it to death (you know its good when it sets car alarms off at idle), it ran about $425, i dont know much about the aftermarket systems though.

Sounds like I may need two. The seller for the system I intend to get (closes in an hour on ebay) says that the stock system had one cat each in front of the pipes. Still, if it closes at $50 then I'm in luck for now. Regarding the hedders, you didn't say if installation involved pulling the engine or what kind of hassle it was.
Thanks for any help!

I switched the headers out once because Firestone poured brake fluid all over them and ruined the headers, and i did not pull the engine to reinstall them. if you email me at viperjmb2@hotmail.com, i can send you a pic.

Most headers don't require pulling the engine. The most difficult is Hedman I believe or Hooker, and requires moving the steering column I believe. Edelbrock slid right in for me, took about 6hrs for my brother and I.

Well, I just won an auction on ebay for an exhaust setup not including cats from a 2001 TA. The guy THINKS it will fit my '91, we'll see. Apparently it's designed for two cats which sucks 'cause I was hoping to SAVE money here, but maybe I can just use yours or my current one and run only the rear piping to my current setup for now. I don't suppose you have two cats to sell cheap...? how much are you asking for the one? thanks!

edit: If I have to ditch the Y-pipe anyway, maybe I can get away with using my current cat or a single replacement rather than installing dual cats to save some money- any thoughts?

sorry, i only have one cat, it is still attatched to the y-pipe, but i would take it off if you wanted me to. I only have one though, it is an aftermarket universal one, and you might need a different adapter kit for your application (since it is for a 2001), but i have a few exhaust parts if you need something to make the system you got work. as far as the cat goes, email me an offer at viperjmb2@hotmail.com
