question about catalytic converter.

Ok guys, heres the deal. My car is a 68 Firebird with a 350 in it. It is mostly stock, which means that there is no catt on it. Would I be better of putting one on it, or just running a flowmaster into dual exhast? Right now it has the nasty stock single exhast, I am gunna have it done but dont have the money for headers right at the moment, so I am gunna put a flowmaster or maybe is afterburner a good brand?? anyone had this? My brother went to put one on his 85z but it was too big I think. I just want to know if I will benefit from a catalytic converter or not. Thanks alot.

Nice lookin' Early Bird.

The purpose of the cat is to clean up the exhaust for pollution purposes, not for performance. If you don't need one, don't bother putting one (or two) on.

I don't know enough about 1st gens, especially the 'Birds, to advise exactly what you should put on it. Headers, though, would seem like a logical first step. The exhaust after that should probably be dual pipes to a dual inlet/outlet transverse.

Oops, did it anyway...

Like Five said cats are not performance items. I wish I didn't have to have a cat on my car. They are just made for emissions and that only. When you hear about guys putting free flow cats and performance cats the only reason they are doing this is because they have to have a cat otherwise we would just rip the cat off. The cat is just another obstacle in the exhaust path.

in my opinion...save the money youre using to get the flowmaster and whatnot....and just run open headers...make sure theyre full-length headers and you'll be set.and by the way..:hail: SWEET CAR MAN!! my uncle has a 68 bird too. i cant wait till hes finished (he just put the new motor in and has the interior gutted).

i cant think of anybody that runs cats when they dont have to and i know alot of people including myself that dont run them when you are supposed to. get some full length headers with 2.5" dual exhaust and whatever mufflers you want.
