Emissions equipment
Emissions equipment
I just bought an 86 Camaro Z-28 with a new 5.7 engine (Holley/edelbrock intake). The car doesn't have a cat and the guy told me that there is anything related to emissions isn't in there. 1. What else do I need besides a new Cat and Smog pump?
2. What parts do you recommend for it (I am thinking a Hi-flo converter from Jeggs...for a 3" flowmaster exhaust)?
3. What type of performance drop will I experience with the addition of the smog stuff? It sounds really mean and I don't want to loose too much of the sound.
I need to get this car inspected and right now it is at my uncle's garage. The mechanics haven't looked at it but I want to know how much money I will have to drop in it to get it inspection ready.

Where are you from? Do you know any details about the inspection procedures that they follow there? As in how strict the visual inspection is, if it is just an idle test, or a dyno test at speed, things like that. I'm going to guess that you'll need a to put a cat on there, but most likely can get away with no air injection system. Let me restate that... I think you can probably pass an exhaust gas analyzer test with a cat but no AIR. That doesn't mean they won't just fail it from looking at it and seeing that they are gone. So, it sort of depends on how strict the test is. Here, the visual inspection is basically just to make sure you have a cat and no big exhaust leaks. Other than that, all they care about is what comes out the pipes.
