Just buy the thing off EBAY, it would be cheaper than buting the metal. I built my engine stand, and the were cheaper to buy if I'd shopped around.

The steel to make it will cost more then buying the whole stand… with some of the discount places out there it’s cheaper to buy all sorts of related stuff then it is to buy the parts… I’ve built some cool welder carts out of the bigger engine stand because for a while they were cheaper then the steel + casters were and then suddenly we got 2 or 3 of them for free with other purchases at one of the local stores.

If you're hell bent on making one, the best thing is to use an engine (or better yet, just a bare block) as a template/jig. I made one some years ago because I was afraid that the weight of my supercharged big block would've folded up a "China Freight" stand. It was made with 1" x .125 square tubing, and the plates that bolted to the block were 3/16" thick for the rear bellhousing flange, and 1/4" for the motor mount bosses.
