I have some ideals for the mounting, but I am going need to do lil homework on wiring them in.
So if any one has any advice prior, please let me know-
I am not 100% sold on the chrome look trim, I may try to convert that to just Black - Reason is I am thinking of making a face plate to replace the stock gauge section-mounting the autometers in the same locations as stock but with a look simular to the 2nd gens. This will allow me to keep the Black and Gold theme on the inside as well. I will work on getting some type of pic of what I am thinking or at least as close as i can find.
Of course and thoughts are welcomed.
Also to add - I was able to get 1 G-Force 5point camlock harness in Black so i will need another. So let me know if any one might have one.
Just looking to see if i can get a set for less then JEGS

Re: BlackTop King's goes Black & Gold

if anyone remembers i had a couple post about the gauges and a set up for the TA. well based off the design idea's this is what i ended up finally doing and i mean finally....i have had these gauges for ...what 3-4months now and still not in car...wtf.

either way i got to do a CAD drawing with the measurments and all- pluged it into the cnc (amanda) at my job- and Boom boom boom...

18g Stainless....
perfect fit....and the 4 smaller gauges, check out how close yet how well they fit...i was so proud of myself for this one...

I leveled them out higher so that the extra room (lower) could be used for something else...

Check it out

Name: customgaugesetup.jpg
Views: 272
Size: 34.5 KB

now i got to fig....do i keep the stainless look and make a piece for the center console and radio brazel to match (maybe other areas as well) or

my orignal idea...which was to mimic the gold look of the 2nd gen trans am's.....maybe a graphic wrap or something else...

only other ideas were to...
Paint Black
Carbon Fiber graphic wrap
....

not really sure, anythoughts

It's a flat surface, and I suspect you're decent with fiberglass, or know someone who is. Why use carbon wrap when you could use actual carbon?

It's pretty much the same but:
1) Try to keep the dust off you/your lungs as it's way worse than fiberglass dust, and it stays in you longer.
2) Try to keep your edges looking nice because it'll show if you have to sand lots of it (sometimes ok).
3) Don't use a really thick epoxy, and be sure to roll it in through the fabric.
4) A SMALL amount of sanding, and a clear coat works wonders.

Thanks for the Tips, I think what ill do is get a small amount and go from there- kind of play with it a bit and see how that goes.

I mean- if I got really good- alot of the TA would be...LOL

Is the resin and epoxy for fiberglass useble for the CF...
I mean I think I will google it and see what i can fine- but it be cool if i could use alot of the same (fiberglass and CF)

plus i agree- clear coat clear coat and more clear...

I have a set of CF flush hood pins - real CF too, but has no clear- and i hate it....so i will tryto clear em and post pics...
when i get that far... dont know if they will go on the car for say but got in case i like em enough to do so.
you know

Re: BlackTop King's goes Black & Gold

To make carbonfiber look good it needs to be vacuum formed (bagged) IMO. There are some tutorials around for it on the net and a ton of youtube vids. Mainthing about CF it's made to be strong and light so that's more or less what you're paying for. I've never tried to do it since I didn't want to make a jig to vacuum bag stuff.

I use to get all my fiberglassing supplies from http://uscomposites.com/ they sell Carbon Fiber stuff too.

Might be a lot easier just to slap a carbon fiber look a like decal over it. With your retro look the old prisms type decal might like look good too.

If you wanted to go more serious look they make Carbon Fiber look a like plastic. Found this post on another forum for a dash build that I'm a member of. http://www.pro-touring.com/forum/showthread.php?t=62487

Thanks for the information and thoughts... i did think to get the decal CF for the look and because i could change it...(i like to do that for some odd reason) and so i can kind of see if i would want to go that route.

but not sure.

That I would do in a heart beat, drop the rest of the idea's and go that direction.
I even hunted for like 2hours for a CF-Gold color either real decal...something....
found nothing at all close.

now even if i couldnt get the exact look of the second gens- that maybe even cool to get something LIKE...so i can still have the twist of difference....but havent found that either..

engineturned - that is the pattern ?

Quit repeatedly saying 77-79 turbo trans am.
There is NO 77-79 turbo trans am.
There is only an 80 and 81 TTA.
(which is actually what my 80TTA in my sig started life as)

I've looked for this too, but haven't found anything. There's a guy in the 2nd Gen community (user RCOMBS on transamcountry.com) who refinishes the original TA dash bezels. I'm sure he could do the engine-turning (basically using a drill press with the appropriate grinding wheel) and apply the gold and clear paint. I'd love to do this with my '89 GTA, so I'd be very interested in whatever you come up with. In my case though, I'd need some kind of overlay for the factory dash and radio trim plate (and maybe the shifter plate too), since I don't have your custom aluminum dash.

Re: BlackTop King's goes Black & Gold

7-1-2010
Well this is the update of 6/26 weekend of heat and Trans Am's.
Did a ton of things, most little but the effect was great.
Biggest change was the rims. I ended up going with the Black Center-Black Lip and gold pinstrip.
Not gonna post all the DIY, but is short I removed all four tires and took the rims all the way to bare metal...Whoa!!! what a pain but way worth the look- I realise the paint will only add to the work the next time i change my mind- so hopefully i just get my Vett 10spokes before then...LOL
I will also like to note: this time- no rattle and tons of clear

this pic shows just paint...no clear at this time!

After this point once i saw the first rim with the pinstrip effect i went all out...even wet sand and buff...although the Black had a nice gloss from the bare metal coming threw and the thriple thick clear coat really made a nice reflection- after wet sanding and buffing them out...i could see me! and the rims currently shine better then the rest of the car...so I will be waxing the TA this weekend something seriouse.
Next was the Rear hatch...wash,vac and re-painted all the panels...all of them, this time! again no rattle and clear...nice shine i think

Engine turning- here is a pretty good tutorial from you tube that might help you. It is easy as long as you plan it out and take your time...

Had I only been able t leave it alone….but I cant…want more?
Desides to change the layout- want shifter up front and to pull console back and up- for a more dramatic flow.
Cut out remaining from mounts:

Re: BlackTop King's goes Black & Gold

Almost complete...at about 95%
Alot is flip flopping on me in life personaly- so as i go with the flow-i have found my mental release to be quit extreme once it hits the car...although i have to say i have impressed my own self...looking wicked....
So I airbrushed the whole trans am at this point except the true black fire and flame effects that will burn off the nose-fade to faces over the T Tops and hit the rear... this is what i got done so far...
Hood: The Trans Am bird is re-done with a metalic and pearl gold- color shifts in light like flickering fire...sweet in the sun, added smoke and ghost faces with in the toned black and grim reaper on the pro street scoop.

as far as removel....like anything else, i would wet sand it off if you wanted to remove it before clear for any reason...

kinda the best and ezest way... i mean airbrushing is not ment to have a lb of paint- so it is fairly eazy to change if you want....

i personally wanted to do it this way ( as in pics) but depeneding on the look design and style- it can and should be done other ways...

You don't look very big, no offense. How big are you? I'm 6'1 or 2 and weigh about 235.

ok, this may be a stupid Q, but are those like decals or what? because the bird looks sick.

also very nice job on the car, all the custom stuff is kickass. some of it isnt my style, but nobody can say that they have a car that looks as unique as that.

Re: BlackTop King's goes Black & Gold

No offence
I am 6'2" at 170 ish (wet) lol
Not a big dude, but seat- i would say- would fit ya, if you were close i say come test them...lol

As for the Car...
No,
No Stickers-No Stencils, all free hand all paint (airbrushed)
I have step by step pics of everything i did if interested...I can help ya out...

but if you really really look- you can see.

for example- the bird had to be done with one line...in order not to over lap or see strokes...

thing is, you can see in the thread i have used that same design bird 3-4 times on the hood...so honestly i have done this bird since i was 8-9yrs...i got it down packed...lol...love trans am's

thanks for the complaiment though...it is unique...and it seems to be my thing...either you love or hate it, not many are in between. so i am glad there are somethings you like...hopefully it gives you idea's
