Removable Transmission Tunnel

Thinking about doing it to mine as a winter project. Not sure if I want to cut and reuse the stock flooring or buy a universal aluminum tunnel. So who has a removable transmission tunnel in their car? How'd you go about doing it? Lets see some pics!

Short of a full blown track car, why would you want this?

Re: Removable Transmission Tunnel

I don't even have one. The only reason I'd like to have one is because I need to pull my tranny at least every 3 years just to replace the SFI dated flexplate. The tranny/flexplate shield is good for 5 years.

Having a removable tunnel just makes access to the bellhousing bolts much easier. With the shields and the engine pushed back to the firewall, access from the top for the bellhousing bolts is zero.

My tranny tunnel has been modified to allow a little more room. The front part has been cut out and a larger section added but it's still not removable.

Re: Removable Transmission Tunnel

Yea it is in the workings of being a full blown track car. The car will not see the street.

And in the last year I have had the motor out once and tranny out twice for different reasons. Now I am about to pull the motor out again. And during these, I have always been unsuccessful at getting the top bellhousing allen bolts out from the top. They are a huge pain from underneath. Plus I am planning on putting in a flexplate and tranny shield when the motor goes back in.

So I figure, instead of fighting with it at least two more times this year why not put in a removable tunnel while the car is sitting and im itching to work on it.

Re: Removable Transmission Tunnel

why are your top bolts allen head and not a normal head? Also ARP makes some bolts with even smaller wrenches being used, I've never had a problem reaching mine from the top for the top 2. Mark the firewall and hammer that area a little for clearance if needed. Heck I moved my motor back 3/4" and still do the top 2 from the top.
