i know of its *****/poser origins, but i just like the look of carbon fiber..id like to wrap my hood (maybe roof, back hatch area as well) potentially either with actual carbon fiber or a good looking vinyl (its hard to tell by looking at pictures on the internet of course)..no i havent completely made up my mind because part of me would hate to not have a real carbon fiber hood if i was going to do it..but i never come close to having that kind of money. has anyone done this before either with real or vinyl? i might just let a shop do it if i can find one in central ohio that is reputable. any helpful input would be sweet!

 

Save your money for the real thing. Wrapping your hood is waste of money and will not achieve anything.

 

Get the real thing. You're paying for the carbon fibre anyway (unless you do vinyl, which looks terrible IMO) so might as well do it right.

 

In person the vinyl looks like vinyl...

You can wrap the hood if you get non-prepreg cloth and use two part epoxy resin (clear with UV inhibitors). The challenge will be getting a roll wide enough to cover the width of the hood. Common roll widths are 50" which is not wide enough so you will have a seem, this will be hard to hide. They sell it by the yard, expect the price to be 30 to 70 per yard.

I would start with an SMC hood (or aftermarket fibre glass), that way it will "sound" more like carbon fibre instead of steel when tapped. To complete the fax carbon fibre experience.

 

"achieving" anything wasnt really the point..i understand that the only benefit (a subjective benefit of course) of vinyl carbon fiber is a look..nothing functional whatsoever. i was planning on making the parts of the car i was talking about black (look at link of members car) with white everywhere else..but i thought a carbon fiber look "might" look cool since ive always liked it when i saw it..i may just do carbon fiber accents or nothing idk..still on the body work etc so a ways off. oh and btw..some of the textured carbon fiber vinyl out nowadays like 3m version looks pretty good in my opinion. i do appreciate the input though guys i am now plenty more hesitant.

oh and mr iroc z ur car looks fantastic. MINE will get there some day..maybe not with cf but still..what size are your wheels and backspacing and how much is it lowered if i may ask? last question is ur chin spoiler a stock 90? seems more pronounced in front..

 

I would imagine the glass hood would expand at a more similar rate with heat than the steel hood would making the carbon fiber layer less likely to crack.

 

Good eye about the front spoiler! It is a 91/92 spoiler with filled in sides made to look like a pre-91 spoiler. The 91/92 spoilers look amazing so I decided to make my own version!
The wheels are 18x8 and 18x11. I think the BS on the rear is 8 or 10'...I forget.
The car is lowered about 3'.

About covering a hood with carbon, it's a cool idea. Since your hood is about 64" wide, it will be difficult to find carbon that wide. You can still try it with 50", but one can't match the seems perfectly, unless you paint a stripe over the seem, or if laying the cloth crossways, cut a swoopy edge to overlap, but that last idea is a less desirable option. I could attach a picture of a swoopy edge, if anyone is interested. If the hood has the indented Z28 scoops, that may be difficult to make the carbon fabric sit in there without lifting. When selecting a fabric, you'd want no less than 5oz 3K. Not all resin is clear, check into that. Vinyl may be more difficult to lay, you can't change/distort it's area? At least carbon offers some forgiveness that way. I would prefer to attempt this project on a spare fiberglass hood. Adding carbon to things makes the world a better place.

 

Why not just buy a carbon fiber hood?

 

Who sells carbon fiber spoilers? camaro and firebird? my 1987 forumla had a wrap around but Im replacing the deck lid with a camaro one and it has the center part of the stock camaro wing on it. So putting on a camaro spoiler would work if the side parts arent needed.

 

Nobody retails a CF stock 3rd gen spoiler or wing. They do make a CF decklid though.
