Hello. I am current restoring my 92 RS and I am putting in a 415 ci stroker kit on an ls2. What transmissions and fabrications will I need to tow a 1987 ski centurion boat behind it. I belive the boat ans trailer are around 3000-3500 lbs
It really doesn't matter what motor or transmission you put in the car. Tow limits are set by the factory and include many factors, not limited to motor and transmission. You could stuff a 6.2 Allison Diesel in the car and it still wouldn't matter.
I don't have my 3rd gen with me today at work, but I looked in the owner's manual of my 94 TA just now, and the tow limit is 1500 pounds, and that includes trailer and whatever is on it. I assume my 91 TA is about the same, so you cannot safely tow that much weight with the car.
Buy yourself a pickup.
If you’re pulled over Youre getting a ticket. They don’t care what you’ve modified. The sticker says what the law follows.
that said too much weight lifts the front tires and you lose steering. The suspension can only handle so much weight before it bottoms out from tongue weight. Then there’s braking which you’d need to make sure the brake are excellent and you may need trailer brakes. Which is the last part. A wiring harness and possibly brake controller setup to control lights and trailer brakes.
and again, Youre still getting a ticket when pulled over.
Now that my trans am is done I was actually thinking about selling my f350. They both have 500hp and the TA has big brakes that totally should stop a trailer really well. Maybe just get a 5 ton dump trailer to pull w the car. I'll just need to wire the electronic brake controller if the wilwoods don't cut it!!!!
First of all, there is no proper frame at the rear to attach a heavy weight trailer hitch. If you did manage to ******* something up, the cars rear suspension is not designed to carry that much weight. Need to carry a minimum of 10% of the trailer weight on the hitch. With what you think is probably 3000 pounds ,means you need to put a minimum of 300 pounds on the hitch. Have 2 fat women sit on the back of the car and see how far down it sits. Don't forget, you also need spring travel while driving so it doesn't take much to bottom out.
My 20' enclosed car trailer is rated for 7000 pounds. That's total weight including everything in the trailer plus the trailer. With my car loaded, that means I can carry roughly an additional 1000 pounds of tools, parts, fuel etc. I've never weighed the tongue weight but its over 700 pounds and my F150 can easily pull it although I do notice the extra weight. A 3/4 or 1 ton truck with stiffer suspension would be better. Electric brakes and a progressive brake controller makes stopping a breeze. Don't need huge oversized brakes on the tow vehicle but they help.
If the tongue weight is too low, you will lose control of the vehicle while towing a trailer and the short wheelbase of a third gen will make it even worse..
Really miss the old days when cars with full frames could easily pull heavy trailers. A 71 Chevelle pulling a car trailer with another Chevelle on it doing 70 down the highway with no problems.
I think the OP should get those air lift shocks. The ones we all thought were cool in high school that lifted the rear a little. Those will totally make the car a tow machine!
