Leonard,

Thirdgen.org was created in 1995 by Dirk Timmermann (Tucson, Arizona) and a now forgotten partner. The site was originally located on a server at the University of Missouri. Since that time, Dirk has taken sole ownership and has been located on a dedicated server located in his office at the University of Arizona. Dirk owns a rare '92 GTA. He's married and has three children. Work and family life keeps him extremely busy and although he retains ownership of this site, and as Scott mentioned, he's not here very often.

I've known Dirk since 1996. Back in 1996, Dirk decided to pull this website. I won't go into details as to why. There was such an uproar that it was resurrected in 1997 under its current format. I suggested have numerous technical forums. Dirk decided not to include a non-tech forum. Today, this is probably the only site that does not have one. The History forum was my idea to which I offered to moderate, along with one other. This is due to my extensive knowledge of third generation Camaros -- I've owned at least one since 1983, my first new car. Drew was the other mod. He knows Firebirds like the back of his hand. Drew bowed out a couple of years ago and I suggested to Dirk that Scott replace him.

Today, I own one of the rarest regular production third gen Camaro, a "20th Anniversary Commemorative Edition" 1987 Z28 convertible. Although there have been reports of a couple more, only twelve have been confirmed to exist today. Of the twelve, only two have a 305 TPI (with 5-speed). One has only A/C as an option while the other is fully loaded with creature comforts. I'm the fortunate owner of the fully optioned car. I also own a 1987 IROC-Z that "looks" almost completely original but has been modded to the hilt.

If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.
Willie,
How do you become a senior member and get admin rights to delete ads or messages I put up by mistake?

Moderators do not have admin rights, only power to manipulate posts within their respective forums. I've known Dirk almost since the very beginning but that doesn't mean anything. When this forum was created, I requested to be a moderator since I carry with me a vast amount of knowledge on third gen Camaros. Drew, the other original moderator, has as much knowledge but for Firebirds.

When the Convertible forum was created, Dirk selected Lon Salgren and I to be moderators for it. Hope this answers your question.

Willie

That site doesn't go back as far as the archives here used to. Black background with yellow and red text. It looked neat but was hard to read.

I still check in here once in a while to see if there's anything new. Most of the time I don't post anything unless I see something that is so blatantly obviously wrong that I feel it needs to be corrected, or if I see something that relates to me directly.

I'm glad someone asked this question, I've always wondered about the history of TGO.

I am the administrator of my own fbody board, (http://www.rochesterfbodyclub.net/phpBB2/) but I think it's safe to say that I spend an equal amount of time here. When I got my 1992 Heritage Edition RS a few years back, this was the first (AND ONLY) place that I referenced in my quest to restore and upgrade the car. There's simply no such thing as a question that can't be answered on this forum

I agree that vBulleitin is sometimes an easy hack, but its stability pretty much makes up for it. I just hope that someone schedules consistent backups of the database. I can't even begin to imagine how massive it must be.

I have always kind-of hoped that I might someday have a chance to moderate here on TGO. But they've got so many loyal moderators, I may never get that opportunity.

Anyway, tons of good info here, it probably wouldn't make for a bad sticky...

Last i was aware, nightly backups were done. It's a simple job to backup the mysql database. Not knowing him personally, i have gathered he is very knowledgeable and knows how important it is to have recent backups.

As far as vB, other than cost/license when compared to phpBB2, i think vB's software is pretty good. It's easy to "hack" away (much more beyond the simple admin template stuff) and make the software do what you want, if you know what you're doing.

Does anyone remember the April 1998 April Fool's joke?
April 1998: As a joke, someone reconfigured thirdgen.org so that it pointed at the Titanic (the movie) fan club's website and forum.

We all descended onto their user forum and took it over, talking cars whilst the little girls all swooned over their Leonardo Dicapprio...

We drowned them out with the sounds of eighties rock and roll and smoking tires.

It was funny as heck.

I think we even started a thread on the average gas mileage of a luxury liner, and we debated if it was 14 gallons per mile ot 10 barrels per mile, I dont think we ever figured it out...

That was an April fools joke. Every year something is done like that Dirk loves to watch everyone freak out for a day.

Outstanding info about TGO, which will unfortunately get lost if not stickied somewhere.

Hey Mods: This info should be condensed and stickied over in Comments / Help / Suggestions.....or here in History......

Re: Who owns/runs ThirdGen.org
Has anything changed with this since 2005? Does Dirk still own the site?

Re: Who owns/runs ThirdGen.org
ThirdGen is owned by Internet Brands. Internet Brands acquired ThirdGen in 2007 from a small company called Xoxide. Xoxide had purchased ThirdGen from Dirk in 2006.

Re: Who owns/runs ThirdGen.org
ThirdGen is one of the only sites I check on a regular basis. I've enjoyed learning the history, having such a great resource for repair/replacement issues, and learning the stories behind the cars we all love.

Thanks to all of you who are involved. I appreciate the efforts in keeping this site going and available for us to use.

PS It would be great for a get together. Lots of the members cars I would love to see.

What's the hierarchy? Who is top moderator and who do they report to at IB?
