spline dilemma please help??

i wasnt sure where to post this but i deemed this the best place, ive got a guy who i am potentially buying a torque converter from, however, my car is a 1984... in the middle of 1984 (april to be exact) they changed the number of splines on the tranny. is there anyway i can tell when my car was built? the VIN decoder doesnt say anything about the exact date... i need help cause this guy is getting kinda edgy

thanks
