At a cross roads with 86 Iroc
At a cross roads with 86 Iroc
Well, I've owned my Iroc for the past 8 or 9 years, 2 years ago it was stolen and recovered but damaged. It now has a salvage title.
Overall the only body damage is to the wheel arch over the drivers rear wheel and the area around the driver's door lock.
The steering column is broken and the car needs regular tune up items and a new set of tires.
Its got some bad gas in it since it has been sitting in my driveway for a year, but the engine runs well once the fuel system clears.
I've taken out the rear seats, carpet, and plastic trim and all of the metal is in great shape including the floors.
To make a long story short, I've been through a lot with the car and put a lot into maintaining it over the years. But now it needs paint and other items which just seems like a never ending hassle.
Is a good running car that has a salvage title worth fixing up? I'm having thoughts about selling it too, although I don't think that I'll get that much for it (no idea?).
I've also been thinking about totally stripping it down and tossing the frame when I'm done.
Selling the parts would probably yield more money.
Has anyone had success parting out a car? In the end, is there an advantage to doing this $$ wise as opposed to selling it?
Or would chopping a good car be just plain blasphemy? I really don't have the patience for a proper restoration on this car anymore.
Any comments are welcome

This is kind of an opinion thing, so I'll give you mine....
If you're no longer interested in trying to fix it up - either not enough time to spend on it, or too much down time, or don't have the right skills or tools or work place, or what you would have to pay to have done is more than the car will ever be worth - then the smart thing to do is either sell it to someone without those constraints, or part it out.
Parting it is a good thing. It helps keep other cars going that are maybe in better shape overall than yours. I don't consider that to be blasphemy, but rather wisdom. For instance, I bought an absolutely perfect 74 Caprice coupe with a 454 a few years ago, and stripped it down, and threw the hulk away.... to get parts to fix up my 74 Caprice 454 convertible. Without the lesser car, I couldn't have kept the nicer one in the shape it needs to be kept in.
Advertise it on the classifieds on this site, see what you can get for the parts it has. Alot will depend on exactly what kind of car it is: LG4 or TPI, 9-bolt or 10-bolt rear and what gears it has, 15 or 16" wheels, etc.

Well I have the skills/tools/space, etc. But I'm basically ready for something else. The only reason I feel guilty about parting it it that it isn't in bad shape. I've seen some really ratty 3 gens around and mine is pretty decent after a few repairs.
Its all stock LB9 TPI Iroc, with the standard 16 inch iroc wheels, ttops, etc.
Who knows maybe I'll just it age a little more.
