Rear axle spline?

Can anyone tell me what year they switched to a 28 rear axle spline? I know that a 86 has 26 but I have a 89 and rebuilding a rear end. Thanks for the help.

The only way you will know for sure, is to pull the axles out and count. Your right, 1986 was bona fide 26 spline. However, finding out what year they switched to 28 spline, your answer will pretty much vary by the time of day you ask it. Some say '88, some say '89 and some say '90 and later for sure.

Sometime during the 1989 Model run. However: If you have a 89
9-bolt you will have 28 spline axle shafts.
